Job summary

Pasco-Hernando State College seeks a Veteran Advisor who will guide students from their initial inquiry through program completion, facilitate new student orientations, and support career exploration and class selections. The role requires campus presence at the North Campus in Brooksville, FL, with occasional evening and/or weekend work.

Responsibilities include advising on course selection, removing barriers to success, coordinating with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs & Enrollment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of advising and retention best practices, FERPA regulations, and transfer issues.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills; ability to engage diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Guide students from inquiry to program completion and facilitate orientations.
  • Advise on course selection and assist online registration; utilize multiple modalities.
  • Identify and resolve barriers to student success using coaching principles.
  • Incorporate retention strategies for students at risk of non-completion.
  • Assist with initial career advisement and direct to career resources.
  • Recruit and conduct outreach to high school students and college-bound individuals.
  • Coordinate dual enrollment and campus outreach activities as needed.
  • Support the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management with advising-related tasks.

Job description

NOTE: Veteran Advisor - flexibility is required to allow for campus presence during Student Engagement or other campus events. Reports to the Assistant Dean, Student Services and Retention at the North Campus, Brooksville, FL. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.

Guides students from their initial inquiry through program completion; facilitates new student orientations; assists students in their career exploration and class selections; provides case management and assistance for targeted student populations and tracks program completion; and participates in community outreach events/activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assists studentsin planningaprogramofstudy, interprets college-placementtest scores, andassesses students’ readinesstobegincollegelevel work.
  2. Advises students inappropriate course selectionand instructs students in theonline registration process,utilizingvariousmodalities.
  3. Identifies and resolves barriers tostudent successutilizing coaching principles.
  4. Incorporateresearch-based retention andpersistence strategiesfor case managementofstudents at risk ofnon-completion.
  5. Assists studentswithinitialcareer advisement, refers themto the College’s careerexploration tool,and guidesstudentstoappropriate career resources.
  6. Recruits and conducts outreach activities to high school students and other college-bound individuals or groups.
  7. As appropriate, servesasdualenrollmentadvisor withareapublic, privateandhomeschools.
  8. Facilitates student orientations and campus tours.
  9. AssiststheAssistant DeanofStudentAffairs&EnrollmentManagementwithfunctions relatedtoacademicadvising, suchas,butnotlimited totesting,orientation, careerassessment, transfer workshops, andotheractivitiesincludinghighschool and community outreach events.
  10. Providesguidanceto studentsabout transfer requirements.Participatesand/or organizesannualTransferFair.
  11. AssiststheAssistant Deanof StudentAffairs&Enrollment Managementwithcommunity outreach andretention initiatives and related follow-up and reports.
  12. Utilizesa widerangeof software andcomputer systemstotrackand analyze student progression andretention.
  13. Represents the Assistant Deanof StudentAffairsandEnrollment Managementinhisorherabsence,asassigned.
  14. Workswiththestudentinformation systemtoprovideonline academicadvisingassistancetostudents andkeepsabreast of updates and enhancementsoftheEnterprise Resource Planning(ERP)systemastheyrelateto advisors.
  15. Assists in implementing theCollegeEquityPlan.
  16. Serves on College and Campus committees and participate in Campus activities as appropriate.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
VETERAN ADVISING (Select Personnel Only) – If assigned to serve in Veterans also:
  1. Serves as the VA School Certifying Official (SCO) for the campus, and other campuses during peak certifying periods.
  2. Advises students using VA Education Benefits on eligibility, application processes, and the application of educational benefits to their academic program and course schedule.
  3. Assists students on internal VA processes for the processing of VA Education Benefits (i.e. VA Certification Request (VCR) or CW Young Tuition Waiver)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Human Services, Education, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of theories and best practices in academic advising and retention.
  • ThoroughunderstandingofallPHSCcertificate, associate,and bachelor’sdegreeprograms.
  • Knowledgeof collegeand community resources includingstudent accessibilityservices, veterans’program,student support, learning support,and student assistance programs.
  • Knowledgeoftransferissuesandarticulationagreements,PHSCpoliciesand procedures, FERPAregulations,andrelevant legislative changes.
  • Knowledgeofcustomerserviceprinciples.
  • Knowledgeofapplicable student supportprograms,academic advising, and/or related programs.
  • Knowledge of career planning principles and practices.
  • Knowledgeofapplicable Federal, State, and locallaws, rules,regulations,policies, andprocedures.
  • Knowledge of diverse populations and cultures.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping principles.
  • Knowledge of computers and related software applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evening and weekend hours consistent with student needs.
  • Ability to review and analyze student needs and recommend appropriate success strategies and referrals.
  • Ability to manage large amounts of information related to academic programs, college policies and procedures, and federal regulations.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple activities and maintain flexibility.
  • Demonstrated leadership practices and ability to think strategically to support change and innovation.
  • Experience with advising students on academic, finance or career issues.
  • Excellent customer relations skills and the ability to establish and maintain a professional working relationship.
  • Public speaking skills including the ability to engage groups as a part of workshops and structured presentations.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize work requirements and demonstrate independent decision making.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public.
  • Ability to coordinate student support programs or services; provide excellent customer service; promote services and maintain records.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS
  • Certification in the department’s advising model required by the end of the employment probationary period.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Human Services, Education, or related field from a regionally accredited institution and 2 years of experience in academic advising, student services, or higher education, strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish
