  • Identifies opportunities for quality improvements and supports implementation of best practices.
  • Provides administrative leadership during routine operations and crises, representing hospital administration when needed.
  • Supports admin by addressing patient- and staff-focused improvement opportunities to enhance experience and efficiency.
  • Builds productive relationships through collaboration, mentorship, transparency, and communication.
  • Coaches staff to foster a respectful, inclusive workplace and address conflicts and well-being.

Purpose

The Administrator on Duty (AOD) is responsible for proactively coordinating patient admissions, discharges, and transfers to support efficient patient throughput throughout the hospital. This role provides operational leadership to ensure safe staffing levels, effective resource utilization, and high-quality patient care. The AOD serves as a key administrative resource for staff, patients, and families while providing interim leadership, crisis management, and administrative oversight as a representative of hospital administration. The position also ensures timely communication of critical patient, employee, and departmental information to appropriate internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees and coordinates patient placement through effective management of the Admission, Discharge, and Transfer (ADT) process, collaborating closely with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and critical thinking to support patient care delivery while maximizing the efficient use of hospital resources and maintaining optimal patient flow.
  • Identifies issues affecting hospital operations and independently initiates corrective actions or engages appropriate resources, including Risk Management, Legal Services, Patient Relations, Hospital Administration, and department leadership.
  • Monitors and promotes a safe, efficient, and patient-centered environment that supports patient and family comfort, visitor safety, and staff effectiveness.
  • Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support continuous improvement efforts, particularly related to capacity management and patient throughput.
  • Identifies opportunities for quality improvement, evaluates best practices, and actively supports implementation of process enhancements.
  • Provides administrative leadership and support during routine operations and times of crisis, serving as the hospital's representative when addressing operational, patient, or staff concerns.
  • Supports hospital administration by identifying and resolving patient- and staff-focused opportunities for improvement that enhance the patient experience and operational efficiency.
  • Builds and maintains productive working relationships through collaboration, mentorship, transparency, and positive communication.
  • Coaches and supports staff in fostering a respectful, inclusive workplace culture while addressing issues related to workplace conflict, diversity, and employee well-being.
  • Demonstrates accountability through effective time management, professional conduct, and commitment to safe work practices.
  • Serves as a mentor and educator for nursing staff, nurse interns, students, graduate nurses, and experienced clinicians. Supports the development of new preceptors and encourages lifelong learning and professional growth.
