Fort Bend County is seeking a Public Records Assistant to support the Office of Legal Counsel by receiving, tracking, and processing Open Records requests and cost estimate letters, drafting legal briefs to seek rulings from the Texas Office of the Attorney General, and regulating disclosure of privileged or confidential information.

You will prepare and process legal documents, act as a liaison between the public, agencies, media, attorneys and county departments, and provide backup to support

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3 years of related experience.
  • Strong computer and typing skills (40 wpm).
  • Strong verbal skills and ability to interact with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with facilitating access to government information under the Texas Public Information Act.
  • Prepare and process legal documents and correspondence; manage mail and email deliveries.
  • Serve as liaison between the public, agencies, media, attorneys, and county departments.
  • Backup to support staff; train new employees on office functions.
  • Assist division manager on special projects requiring legal knowledge and discretion.
  • Review documents for exemptions and redact as needed under public information laws.
  • Set up and maintain legal files and public records request files.
  • Participate in emergency management duties during local disasters.

  • Assists with facilitating public access to government information under the direction of legal counsel, including receiving, tracking and processing open records requests and cost estimate letters, drafting legal briefs to seek a ruling from the Office of the Attorney General, and regulating disclosure of privileged, exempt and/or confidential information pursuant to the Texas Public Information Act.
  • Prepares and processes legal correspondence and documents, as well as mail, email, and arrange delivery of legal and other papers to parties as directed.
  • Acts as a liaison between the public, agencies, media, attorneys and other county departments and elected offices.
  • Backup to all support staff positions; assists with incoming telephone calls and in-person requests from the public.
  • Assists or instructs other peers with similar duties, trains new employees on all office support functions.
  • Assists division manager with special projects that will require the use of institutional knowledge, state and local laws and creation of professional work product.
  • Reviewing documents and redacting information exempt from public disclosure under the Public Information Act.
  • Sets up and maintain general counsel files and public information request files.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • High school diploma/GED.
  • 3 years job related experience.
  • Strong computer and typing skills (40 wpm).
  • Strong verbal skills; ability to interact effectively with other employees and the public.
  • Possess strong verbal skills and is familiar with Texas laws governing public information.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $18.31 - $22.89 hourly based on qualifications

CLOSING DATE: Upon filling position
