- Current EMS credential at or above the level appropriate for the course being taught.
- Current instructor credentials, certifications, or approvals required by the applicable state EMS regulatory authority for assigned courses.
- Current CPR certification appropriate to the instructional assignment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current EMS clinical practices, patient care standards, and prehospital operations.
- Relevant field experience in emergency medical services, fire/rescue, emergency response, or a closely related setting.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical and clinical information to students with varying levels of experience.
- Ability to demonstrate and evaluate EMS psychomotor skills safely and consistently.
- Ability to maintain required professional credentials and instructor qualifications throughout employment.
- Ability to work with diverse faculty/ student population.
- Flexibility of working hours that include days, evenings, weekends and online classes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current Paramedic credential.
- Associate degree or higher in Emergency Medical Science, Emergency Services, Education, Health Sciences, or a related field.
- Previous EMS teaching, precepting, field training, or instructional experience.
- Experience teaching adult learners in a community college, continuing education, public safety, or workforce development environment.
- Current instructor credentials in disciplines such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, ITLS, AMLS, EPC, or other EMS-related specialty programs and courses.
- Experience with simulation-based education and scenario development.
- Experience with online or hybrid instruction and learning management systems.
- Experience working with fire departments, EMS agencies, rescue organizations, law enforcement agencies, emergency management, or other public safety partners.
- Experience working with various LMS for tracking and documenting student skills, data, and progress.
Position Description
The Part-Time/Adjunct Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Instructor provides high-quality instruction for Emergency Medical Services courses offered through the Brunswick Community College’s Public Safety CE program. The instructor is responsible for delivering classroom, laboratory, simulation, and practical skills instruction consistent with applicable state and national EMS standards, College policies, and approved course objectives.
The instructor works under the direction of the EMS Program Director and supports the College’s mission by preparing EMS students and currently credentialed professionals to provide safe, competent, ethical, and patient-centered emergency medical care.
This is a part-time position. Teaching assignments may include daytime, evening, weekend, hybrid, and/or off-campus classes based on program needs.
- Provide instruction in EMS initial education, continuing education, refresher, credentialing, and specialty courses as assigned.
- Teach course content in accordance with approved curricula, course objectives, College policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Provide classroom lectures, practical skills instruction, laboratory activities, scenarios, simulations, and other appropriate learning experiences.
- Demonstrate current and appropriate EMS assessment, treatment, communication, and operational practices.
- Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, presentations, skills stations, scenarios, and other course materials as required by BCC/NCCCS/SACSCOC.
- Evaluate student knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, professionalism, and achievement of course objectives using approved evaluation methods.
- Administer and evaluate written examinations, practical skills assessments, competency evaluations, and other student assessments as assigned.
- Maintain accurate attendance, grade, testing, skills, and course documentation.
- Submit required instructional records and documentation within established deadlines.
- Provide students with timely, professional, and constructive feedback regarding academic and practical performance.
- Maintain a safe and professional instructional environment during classroom, laboratory, simulation, and practical activities.
- Properly use and care for EMS equipment, simulation equipment, instructional technology, supplies, and College facilities.
- Assist with setup, inventory, cleaning, and appropriate storage of instructional equipment and supplies.
- Maintain current knowledge of EMS practices, educational standards, protocols, equipment, and changes affecting prehospital emergency care.
- Participate in instructor orientation, professional development, program meetings, skills standardization, and other training as required.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with students, faculty, staff, clinical partners, public safety agencies, and members of the community.
- Support student success while consistently maintaining established academic, behavioral, attendance, and performance standards.
- Maintain student confidentiality and comply with applicable College policies and legal requirements regarding student information.
- Model professional conduct, ethical behavior, teamwork, accountability, cultural awareness, and respect appropriate to the EMS profession.
- Maintain open and professional communication with BCC (faculty, staff, supervisors, administrators, etc.), students, community members, and representatives from business entities within the community.
- Perform other instructional duties related to EMS and Public Safety Continuing Education as assigned.
