Responsibilities

  • Ensure a sufficient number and breadth of electives spanning medical specialties to meet student learning needs and career goals.
  • Regularly assess gaps and emerging needs and oversee the development of new elective offerings.
  • Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, development, and retention of faculty participating in elective experiences.
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and support to faculty to ensure effective teaching and alignment with program goals.
  • Partner with assessment and quality improvement to evaluate elective effectiveness and drive improvement.
  • Oversee maintenance and accuracy of the elective catalog and integration of student evaluation data.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive learning environment across all elective experiences.
  • Support the development and remediation as needed to ensure achievement of elective requirements.

Description:

The Department of Clinical Sciences in the newly established Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine invites applicationsfor a Adjunct Faculty position in the field of a primary carediscipline. We are recruiting new faculty who have achievedexcellence in education, teaching, and research and are prepared tocontribute to our bold vision (http://www.uh.edu/medicine/).

The Director of the Electives will provide oversight of the electives of the College of Medicine, ensuring the breadth andquality commensurate with the robust student experiences studentsneed for clinical skill development and career exploration. The jobreports to the Associate Dean for Medical Education and isresponsible for development of the electives catalog, studentassessment and support, and alignment of clinical skills with thecollege of medicine medical education program objectives,competency-based frameworks, and LCME accreditationstandards.

The University of Houston is a comprehensive, Carnegie Tier 1public research university located on a park-like campus close tothe Texas Medical Center and major energy companies, with over45,000 students distributed across 15 colleges, including Nursing,Pharmacy, Optometry, and Social Work. This position will be part-time at 0.4 FTE.

Responsibilities
Elective Program Oversight and Development
  • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing management of elective experiences across the curriculum.
  • Ensure a sufficient number and breadth of electives spanning medical specialties to meet student learning needs and careergoals.
  • Regularly assess gaps and emerging needs and oversee thedevelopment of new elective offerings.
Faculty Recruitment and Engagement
  • Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, development, and retentionof faculty participating in elective experiences.
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and support to faculty to ensureeffective teaching and alignment with program goals.
Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with the Office of Assessment and Quality Improvement toevaluate elective effectiveness and lead continuous qualityimprovement efforts.
  • Use student outcomes, evaluations, and performance data to informprogram enhancements and ensure alignment with educationalobjectives.
  • Support the development and implementation of competency-basedassessment strategies for student learning.
Program Maintenance and Operations
  • Oversee the maintenance and accuracy of the elective catalog,including integration of student evaluation data.
  • Ensure consistency, organization, and transparency of electiveofferings and requirements.
Learning Environment, Student Experience, and Remediation
  • Promote a positive, inclusive learning environment across allelective experiences.
  • Address concerns and provide timely feedback to faculty, staff,and students to support high-quality experiences.
  • Provide student academic support and remediation as needed toensure achievement of elective course requirements and relevantcompetencies.
Curriculum Integration and Collaboration
  • Collaborate with curriculum leadership to ensure vertical andhorizontal integration of electives within the MD program.
  • Participate in and lead meetings related to elective planning andcurricular development.

  • Experience in mentoring and supporting faculty members in theirprofessional development.

Applicants must have a PhD, MD or DO, dependent on the position,from an accredited institution. Official transcripts are requiredfor faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of thefinal candidate(s). Physician applicants must possess anunrestricted Texas Medical License and board certification in theirspecialty. While exceptions may be considered, approval must beobtained from the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of theCollege of Medicine and the Office of the Provost. All positionswithin the University of Houston System are security sensitive andwill require a criminal history check. Physician applicants arerequired to provide documentation of current licensure and boardcertification as part of their application materials.
