Description:

The University of Houston Tillman J Fertitta Family College ofMedicine (UHCOM) at the University of Houston announces anon-tenure track, open rank, Clinical Faculty - Associate Dean,Foundational Sciences.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Medical Education, theAssistant Dean for Foundational Sciences is responsible forspearheading the development and delivery of an integratedfour-year curriculum of biomedical and health systems sciences;works collaboratively with course directors, biomedical, clinicalscience, and health systems sciences faculty, and institutionalleadership to ensure the highest standards of educationalexcellence; and assures medical student achievement of appropriatecompetencies.

  1. 1. Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of thefoundational science curriculum, including Phase 1 biomedicalscience courses as well as integration of foundational scienceconcepts across the four-year curriculum.
  2. 2. Develop and Deliver Evidence-Based Pedagogy: Utilize and ensurebest practices in medical education to develop and deliverinnovative and evidence-based teaching strategies, ensuring thatthe curriculum reflects contemporary medical knowledge andpedagogical advancements.
  3. 3. Vertical and Horizontal Integration: Collaborate with facultyacross courses and disciplines to ensure seamless integration ofcontent vertically across the curriculum and horizontally withinspecific courses, fostering interdisciplinary connections andreinforcing key concepts.
  4. 4. Facilitate Learner-Centered Experiences: Design and implementeducational experiences that prioritize active learning, criticalthinking, and problem-solving skills, engaging students inmeaningful ways that promote deep understanding and application ofknowledge.
  5. 5. Preparation for Clinical Practice: Develop curricular componentsand related competencies that bridge foundational science knowledgewith clinical application, emphasizing the development of clinicalreasoning, communication skills, and professionalism.
  6. 6. Evidence-Based Assessment of Learner Achievement: Contribute tothe development and implementation of robust assessmentmethodologies to evaluate learner achievement, using data-driveninsights to inform curricular enhancements and optimize studentlearning outcomes, including following the progress of studentsthroughout the curriculum based on assessments.
  7. 7. Curriculum Outcome Achievement: Work closely with faculty andstakeholders to define and assess curriculum outcomes, monitoringprogress and making adjustments as necessary to ensure alignmentwith institutional goals and accreditation standards.
  8. 8. Program Evaluation and Assessment: Participate in ongoingprogram evaluation and assessment activities, collecting andanalyzing data to inform continuous improvement efforts and ensurethe effectiveness of educational interventions.
  9. 9. Ensure Success on External Outcome Measures: Implementstrategies to support student preparation and success on externalassessments, including licensure exams, tracking studentperformance and implementing targeted interventions asneeded.
  10. 10. Academic Advising and Tutoring: In collaboration with theoffices of student affairs and medical education, provide guidanceand support to students through academic advising and tutoringinitiatives, helping them navigate the curriculum, identifylearning needs, and achieve their academic goals.
  11. 11. Remediation and Alternate Curricular Pathways: Assist indeveloping remediation plans and alternate curriculum pathways forstudents who are not progressing as intended in thecurriculum.

Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field (MD, DO, PhD) from anaccredited institution, with a strong background in medicaleducation or a related discipline.
  • Texas Medical Licensure (unrestricted), if applicable.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards for medical education(e.g., LCME, ACGME).
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in evidence-based pedagogy,curriculum design, implementation, and program evaluation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with theability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders and fostereducational excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop faculty skills in teaching,learning, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data-drivendecision-making, with the ability to utilize assessment data todrive continuous improvement.
  • Experience in supporting learners from a wide array ofbackgrounds in medical education and the ability to promote apositive learning environment that values and respects all studentsand faculty members.
  • Evidence of robust scholarly work in education with a trackrecord of internal and extramural funding preferred.
  • UME experience preferred with a track record of scholarlycontributions to the field of medical education.

Salary and rank commensurate with experience.

Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD/DO, dependent on the position,from an accredited institution. Official transcripts are requiredfor faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of thefinal candidate(s). Physician applicants must possess anunrestricted Texas Medical License and board certification in theirspecialty. While exceptions may be considered, approval must beobtained from the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of theCollege of Medicine and the Office of the Provost. All positionswithin the University of Houston System are security sensitive andwill require a criminal history check. Physician applicants arerequired to provide documentation of current licensure and boardcertification as part of their application materials.
