Job description

About Curative

Curative is building the future of health insurance with a first-of-its-kind employer-based plan designed to remove financial barriers and make care truly accessible: one monthly premium with $0 copays and $0 deductibles*. Backed by our recent $150M in Series B funding and valuation at $1.275B, Curative is scaling rapidly and investing in AI-powered service, deeper member engagement, and a smart network designed for today’s workforce.

Our north star guides everything we do: healthcare only works when people can actually use it. That belief drives every decision we make: from how we design our plan, support our members, to how we collaborate as a team.

If you want to do meaningful work with a team that moves fast, experiments boldly, and cares deeply, Curative is the place to do it. We’re growing fast and looking for teammates who want to help transform health insurance for the better.

SUMMARY

We are seeking an Actuary to own the pricing of Curative’s ASO (self-funded) product line, with primary focus on employer stop loss pricing - both specific (individual) and aggregate. Stop loss is sold exclusively bundled with Curative’s ASO/self-funded plan, so this role sits at the center of how the self-funded block is quoted, renewed, reserved, and reported. You will own the actuarial mechanics end to end: manual and experience rating, credibility, trend, risk load and retention build-up, attachment-point and corridor structures, monthly IBNP valuation of the stop loss layer, and the state rate filings that support the product. This is a highly visible role that pairs technical actuarial ownership with direct matrix relationships across Underwriting, Sales, Account Management, Finance, and Operations, and with state regulators. You will collaborate closely with these teams to help drive Curative’s growth and profitability as the ASO block expands into new states.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own specific and aggregate stop loss pricing for Curative’s self-funded ASO groups
  • Maintain and enhance the stop loss rating methodology, including trend, credibility standards, group-size risk load, expected loss ratio targets, and retention build-up
  • Price new business and renewal quotes across all plan options, communicating rate rationales directly to Underwriting and Sales Teams
  • Manage end-to-end ASO pricing models, continuously updating core inputs, network blends, administration, and specialty rider pricing
  • Conduct experience studies for the self-funded block, evaluating large claims, leveraged trends, credibility, and actual-vs-expected stop loss performance
  • Manage state stop loss rate filings and actuarial certifications, ensuring compliance with state regulations and Actuarial Standards of Practice
  • Partner with Underwriting to refine stop loss underwriting guidelines, eligibility rules, and claim review procedures while providing final peer review and technical validation
  • Support settlement and experience-refund reporting, renewal strategy, and executive reporting on stop loss and ASO financial metrics
  • Mentor junior actuarial staff and provide technical review of their work
  • Performs other projects and duties in support of the company as required
QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions:

  • Working knowledge of self-funded/ASO plan mechanics and employer stop loss coverage - specific and aggregate structures, attachment points and corridors, contract basis, pooling, lasering, and terminal liability
  • Strong technical grounding in excess-layer pricing: claim probability distributions, leveraged trend, credibility, and risk/contingency margin
  • Strong analytical skills and creative problem-solving abilities with attention to detail
  • Advanced Excel modeling skills; able to build, audit, and document a multi-tab rating model
  • Able to translate and effectively communicate results and implications of actuarial, data, financial, and underwriting analyses to non-actuarial partners, executives, and regulators
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and manage matrix stakeholders to execute on projects and priorities
  • Capable of independently driving multiple projects and workstreams
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, finance, economics, business, computer science or related degree
  • Three or more years of health actuarial experience, including hands-on experience pricing or reserving employer medical stop loss and self-funded (ASO) business
  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation required; Fellow (FSA) and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) preferred. Candidates who meet the U.S. Qualification Standards to sign actuarial certifications in support of rate filings are strongly preferred
  • Experience with industry manual rate bases and stop loss factor tables (e.g., Milliman Health Cost Guidelines claim probability distributions and aggregate factors) a plus
  • Experience with state health insurance rate filings, including SERFF submissions and regulator correspondence, a plus
  • Experience with IBNR/IBNP estimation and monthly close/reserve reporting a plus
