  • Oversee pricing oversight, rate manual governance, filings, and compliance activities; provide governance and documentation for actuarial work.
  • Support reinsurance strategy, risk assessment, and negotiation of terms; monitor product design and market conditions.
  • Manage reserving processes, IBNR estimates, and alignment with financial reporting and statutory requirements.
  • Provide reporting, forecasting, and staff development to ensure timely, accurate actuarial deliverables.

Position Overview

The Director, Actuarial - Stop Loss is responsible for leading actuarial pricing, risk assessment, reserving support, and business performance analytics for stop loss and related large-claim products. This includes new business and renewal pricing, underwriting guideline support, rate filings, reserving, financial and management reporting, reinsurance support, and compliance activities.

This position is expected to partner closely with the Large Claims Solutions Segment Leader, underwriting, finance, product, compliance, and reinsurance stakeholders to support profitable growth and disciplined risk management.

Essential Elements
  • Large Claims Actuarial SME – Serve as a subject matter expert on large-claim products, including stop loss and evolving solutions such as gene therapy and other high-cost claim products. Support product development, independent research, market monitoring, and presentations for internal stakeholders, business partners, meetings, and conferences.
  • Pricing Oversight – Establish, maintain, and document new business and renewal rating bases. Review significant account and business segment renewals, evaluate experience results, and provide clear management reporting on pricing performance, assumptions, and emerging risks.
  • Rate Manual – Provide actuarial expertise and coordination for the development, maintenance, and governance of BCS’ Stop Loss Manual and related rating tools, assumptions, and documentation.
  • Reinsurance Support and Risk Assessment – Provide actuarial support for reinsurance strategy, placement, and renewal activities to help protect the company from concentrated risk exposure and support appropriate risk transfer. Assess implications of changes in product design, sales distribution, underwriting guidelines, and market conditions. Work with intermediaries and reinsurers to manage BCS’ exposure and support negotiation of new business and renewal terms.
  • Filings and Compliance – Manage actuarial components of regulatory filings, including state rate filings, actuarial memoranda, certifications, and related timelines. Support monitoring of product-specific compliance requirements and ensure actuarial work is appropriately documented and supportable.
  • Reserving – Support review of outstanding liabilities and development of appropriate Incurred but not Reported (IBNR) reserve estimates for management reporting. Reconcile reserve data to financial reporting, document assumptions and judgments, and support quarterly statutory reserve work and year-end audit requirements.
  • Reporting and Forecasting – Support financial forecasts, business plan projections, and performance monitoring for the LCS segment. Develop, maintain, and settle contingent commission, experience refund, and experience-based premium adjustment formulas as applicable.
  • Training and Development of Staff – Oversee actuarial work products, timelines, and deliverables. Establish clear process documentation and support training of team members on routine and judgment-based work items, including reserving, risk assessment, pricing, and reporting.
Requirements
Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, finance, economics, or a related field required
  • Associate or Fellow of the Society of Actuaries designation required
  • Maintenance of continuing education and professional credential requirements, including MAAA compliant status, as applicable

10+ years of actuarial, insurance, health, stop loss, reinsurance, or related business experience, with demonstrated ability to lead complex analyses and communicate results to senior stakeholders

Experience with stop loss, large claims, medical cost trends, underwriting, reserving, or reinsurance strongly preferred

Strong documentation, governance, and communication skills, with the ability to explain actuarial assumptions, judgment, and business implications clearly

Travel Required

Travel may be required for industry conferences, business partner meetings, reinsurer meetings, and BCS office visits, including onsite or minimum monthly visits as business needs require.

Compensation And Benefits

The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is:

$145,000 - $175,000

Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of the month following the first day of employment.
