Job summary

Dexter Health Care in Dexter, ME is hiring an Activities Director to lead programs that entertain, exercise, relax and engage residents. You will help meet social, emotional, and cognitive needs and work with staff to tailor activities to individual residents.

The role reports to the facility Administrator and offers benefits, flexible shifts, and opportunity to develop meaningful volunteer programs in a long-term care setting.

Qualifications

• Degree or certification in therapeutic recreation or equivalent.
• Certification as activity coordinator or relevant training.
• Experience coordinating activities in a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and direct a program of activities for residents.
• Assist residents with social, cognitive, and emotional needs.
• Collaborate with team and volunteers; report to facility administration.
• Maintain detailed activity records and program documentation.

Activities Director:

A critical part of our Resident’s care, the ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR provides opportunities for entertainment, exercise, relaxation, and expression and fulfills basic psychological, social, and spiritual needs. The Director will work with team members to plan, organize, and direct a program of activities available to all residents of the facility. Additionally, providing assistance to the physically, emotionally, and cognitively impaired individual and family to explore appropriate hobbies and leisure activities. As part of the facility leadership team, the Director reports to the facility Administrator.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Skill at working with individuals who have cognitive, physical or sensory disabilities.
• Practical knowledge of how an Activity Department functions in a nursing facility.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills with high level of energy and enthusiasm
• Experience in working with volunteers and ability to organize and develop volunteer program.
• Organization, documentation, and implementation of detailed programs.
• Genuine caring for and interest in elderly and disabled people in a nursing facility.

Meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Degree and certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist, music therapist, art therapist; or
• Certified activity coordinator by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals; or
• Two years of experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, in which one year was full-time in a resident activities program in a health care setting; or
• Prior completion of a state-approved training course, or willingness to complete a state approved training course within six months of employment.
• Excellent creative and communication skills.
