Job summary

Feeding America is hiring an Accounts Receivable and Grants Accountant to manage revenue processing, month-end close, and grant reporting for government contracts and donor grants.

The role collaborates with the Financial Compliance Analyst across departments, ensuring compliance and accurate financial statements while supporting audits and year-end activities.

General Position Summary

The Accounts Receivable (A/R) and Grants Accountant is responsible for a range of duties related to revenue transaction processing, month-end close, monthly reporting, year-end audit support and other activities as needed.

This role acts as point person for processing and invoicing of various government contracts, and grants/awards from donors, and coordinates related work across departments in partnership with the Financial Compliance Analyst.

Job Responsibilities
Grant & Government Contracts
  • Provide positive and professional customer service to external stakeholders and internal teams and colleagues seeking finance and accounting support.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and donor-specific requirements. Understand the scope of contracts, grants, and awards by reviewing the project description, narratives and other documentation in partnership with the Financial Compliance Analyst.
  • Prepare accounting and reporting for governmental contracts, grants, and awards including preparing schedules, invoices, and specialized internal and external financial reports and statements.
  • Assist with monitoring and compliance audits required by governmental entities.
  • Lead monthly grants meeting for in-process grants and contracts providing spend down updates for departmental budget planning.
Accounts Receivable
  • Process contributions and other accounts receivable revenue
  • Track and record all of revenue timely and accurately
  • Verify accuracy of all revenue data in coordination with the Development team and Financial Compliance Analyst.
  • Reply to agency questions regarding payments, requests for invoices, credits, etc.
  • Prepare monthly agency statements and A/R aging reports
Month End Close
  • Draft journal entries as needed related to Fixed Asset additions, disposals and depreciation
  • Support timely month-end close process including assigned journal entries, such as investment account activity and insurance expense.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of general ledger data with respect to the revenue cycle, government contracts, and donor restricted grants.
General Finance Support
  • Serve as a backup for payroll and accounts payable functions.
  • Assist with annual audit process, PBC lists and information gathering
  • Participate in meetings, committees, and events as required.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are appropriately documented and maintained as related to the revenue cycle

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersections between hunger, poverty, racial inequity and social injustice. Must have awareness of the issues faced by community members experiencing poverty or facing food insecurity.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting, reporting, practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of government contracts and federal award audit requirements
  • Ability to meet frequent and sometimes tight deadlines while managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies and procedures, vendor contracts and governmental regulations.
  • Skill in using computer software including MS Office. Advanced level of Excel skills
  • Skill in using computer software designed for accounting such as Microsoft Navision.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and independently.
  • Ability to recognize the need for due care with confidential information.
Education and/or Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience required; non-profit experience preferred.
Job Conditions
  • Work is performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heating and ventilation. Requires extended periods of sitting, use of laptop computer, and the ability to routinely lift and carry up to 10 pounds. Position may be subject to periodic increased workloads due to month/year end closings and audits.
Physical Demands
  • Prolonged periods of sitting while keyboarding; repetitive use of hands and wrists. Requires extensive close work and prolonged mental focus on figures, forms and computer screens
