Accounting Technician in Hampton, VA 23668

$50,000.00 - $55,000.00 Semi-Monthly

Location

200 William R. Harvey Way, Hampton, VA 23668

The Accounting Technician provides first-level accounting and financial support within the Athletics Business Office, ensuring that departmental financial transactions are accurately prepared, documented, and processed in accordance with University policy. Working under the direction of the Athletics Business Manager, this position supports the preparation, review, and tracking of purchase requisitions, vouchers, invoices, and related documentation so that transactions move through the business process accurately and efficiently.

This is a hands‑on role well suited to a detail‑oriented individual with a foundation in accounting, bookkeeping, or business, including strong recent graduates ready to build a career in finance operations. The Accounting Technician prepares documentation accurately, supports strong financial recordkeeping, and helps the department operate with precision and timeliness, enabling the Athletics Business Manager to focus on financial management, analysis, and reporting.

Reporting and Working Relationships

This position is based within the Athletics Business Office and sits administratively within Intercollegiate Athletics. Day‑to‑day accounting work — the preparation, review, tracking, and reconciliation described below — is directed by the Athletics Business Manager, who is responsible for the department’s financial operations.

The Accounting Technician works closely with Athletics coaches and staff, the Athletics Business Manager, the Office of Business, Finance, and Operations, and vendors.

Examples of Duties
  • Prepare and review purchase requisitions, vouchers, purchase orders, and check requests for the Athletics department, verifying completeness and accuracy in accordance with University policy.
  • Review supporting documentation for compliance with University procurement and financial policies.
  • Process team travel, per diem, and expense documentation, verifying support and account coding.
  • Coordinate with coaches and staff on travel planning and scheduling to support well‑planned, cost‑effective group travel arrangements.
  • Support the accurate intake and recording of departmental revenue, coordinating with appropriate staff to ensure deposits and coding are complete and correct.
  • Assist with financial activity related to games and departmental events, including related settlements and documentation.
  • Compile and reconcile procurement card activity and prepare summary reporting for management review.
  • Track financial requests through to completion and maintain organized, audit‑ready records and files.
  • Reconcile transactions and verify account allocations to support accurate recording of departmental revenue and expenditures.
  • Assist with vendor setup and maintenance and support the accurate flow of information between departmental systems and the University’s system of record.
  • Support the Athletics Business Manager with month‑end and year‑end processes, data gathering, and routine financial reporting, including data used for required compliance reporting.
  • Monitor and manage the Athletics Business Office inbox and financial correspondence, triaging incoming requests, responding to or routing routine items, and tracking them through to resolution so nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Serve as a first point of contact for coaches and staff on routine process and status questions, communicating professionally with them and with vendors to obtain documentation and resolve discrepancies.
  • Maintain the Athletics Business Office’s financial files and records in an organized, retrievable, and audit‑ready manner.
  • Support continuous improvement of departmental financial processes.
  • Perform other related accounting and business‑office duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles, including debits and credits and account coding.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and the ability to learn financial and ERP systems quickly.
  • Strong attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to produce accurate, well‑organized work.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple requests and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Professionalism and sound judgment in handling sensitive financial information.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • One or more years of accounting, bookkeeping, or financial support experience, including hands‑on work with transactions such as accounts payable, requisitions, reconciliations, or general ledger support.
  • Experience with Banner or a comparable ERP system.
  • Experience in a higher education, athletics, or public‑sector finance environment.
Supplemental Information

This role is a strong fit for someone early in their finance career who is eager to grow. In addition to the qualifications above, the ideal candidate is:

  • Analytical: a critical thinker who wants to understand why a transaction is coded or documented a certain way, not just how to process it.
  • Self‑organizing: able to organize their own work effectively and operate well in a fast‑paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Growth‑minded: eager to develop, take on more responsibility over time, and grow within the University’s finance function.
  • Trustworthy: dependable, discreet with sensitive information, and professional in every interaction with coaches, staff, and vendors.
