Position Overview

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) seeks an Accounting Assistant to analyze accounting and cash transactions in the Cashiers Office. The role ensures accounting integrity, compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, and proper record maintenance.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide support of the Cashiering and Student Accounting functions, treating all students, faculty, and staff in a courteous manner.
  • Open and close cashiering system in accordance with procedure manual; coordinate time‑off requests to ensure coverage from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
  • Accurately complete Daily Activity Reports, ensuring balance and timely preparation of adjustments and corrections.
  • Reconcile end‑of‑day cashier balance accounts for transactions processed that day; save completed reports in the designated network folder.
  • Work with the Cashier Office Manager to complete daily tasks and improve business processes.
  • Communicate information to individuals or groups and deliver presentations suited to the audience’s characteristics and needs.
  • Identify and resolve issues and concerns related to discrepancies and other inquiries in the Cashier’s office.
  • Maintain technical accounting knowledge needed to report financial data, monitor and reconcile the deposit clearing account daily, and complete required reports, including month‑end analysis.
  • Maintain complete and accurate financial records that support the full audit trail of each transaction, ensuring compliance with records retention requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of Banner Finance or an equivalent system; records management, accounting, or collections experience.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision, demonstrating initiative and excellent analytical, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Great interpersonal skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals in a high‑pressure environment.
  • Self‑starter with strong time‑management and prioritization abilities.
  • Ability to manage work interruptions related to foot traffic, email inquiries, and phone calls.
  • Strong customer‑service skills with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to communicate with students and public members to provide accurate information regarding student accounts and refunds.
  • Capability to troubleshoot and resolve billing discrepancies and other account inquiries.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalency and one year of accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • 1–2 years of relevant experience handling cash or processing monetary transactions and reconciling with disparate financial systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
