Job description

Accounting Supervisor
Location: Oakland, CA
Employment Type: Full-Time, In-Office
Salary: Commensurate with Experience
About Us:
At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland (BGCO), we are committed to inspiring and enabling young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. As we continue to expand our impact, we seek a talented, hands-on Accounting Supervisor to oversee and strengthen our financial operations. This is a unique opportunity for a skilled accounting professional who thrives in a mission-driven environment and wants to make a tangible difference in the Oakland community.

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly capable Accounting Supervisor to serve as the sole financial professional managing the day-to-day accounting operations at BGCO. This critical role requires a self-sufficient, detail-oriented, and proactive leader who can drive financial accuracy, maintain strong internal controls, and provide strategic financial insights to leadership. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with a collaborative spirit, demonstrating a high level of integrity, independence, and a commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage all core accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger management, and reconciliations. • Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. • Monitor cash flow, ensure timely payments, and manage organizational budgets. • Develop and implement robust internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with organizational policies and best practices. • Lead the preparation for annual audits and coordinate the submission of all required tax filings (e.g., Form 990). • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, grant reporting requirements, and all federal, state, and local regulations and tax laws. • Audit Payroll data. • Partner with executive leadership to support financial planning, forecasting, and strategic decision-making. • Maintain professional relationships with banks, auditors, vendors, and other external partners. • Assist in preparing clear, concise financial reports for the Board of Directors and other stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization. • Strong command of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting practices. • Proficient in QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Excel, and other standard accounting tools. • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and time management skills. • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines without supervision. • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly and effectively present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

• CPA certification or equivalent is highly desirable. • Experience managing grant funding, restricted donations, and complex reporting requirements. • Familiarity with nonprofit audit processes and government compliance standards. • Previous experience in a small or mid-sized nonprofit environment is a plus.

Why Join BGCO?

• Opportunity to make a lasting impact on youth and families in Oakland. • A dynamic, supportive, and mission-driven organizational culture. • Significant ownership of financial operations and direct collaboration with leadership. • Competitive salary and benefits package.
