Job summary

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is seeking a Civil Service accounting professional to support invoicing, bookkeeping, and financial reporting. The role requires attention to detail and the ability to work with multiple accounts and units.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years (24 months) from accounting, bookkeeping, office support, or closely related experience.
  • Course work in accounting or related discipline may count toward the experience requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Review invoices and statements, verify information, ensure funds are available, and resolve issues with submitting unit; determine accounts involved and code transactions.
  • Answer inquiries and provide information concerning invoices, outstanding balances, and payments.
  • Perform complex coding where advanced knowledge is required and/or act as a resource for other staff.
  • Post financial information to journals, registers, ledgers, and related records; make adjustments and reconcile accounts.
  • Audit ledgers and accounts maintained by others.
  • Research and prepare stop payments and related actions.
  • Prepare or assist in preparing financial statements or reports (cash flow, cash receipts, disbursements, etc.).
  • Reconcile reports from outside agencies and operating units by contacting units and researching discrepancies.
  • Interpret or compose correspondence requiring knowledge of departmental regulations, procedures, practices, and policies.
  • Participate in interviewing, training, and evaluating staff.
  • Perform duties of lower levels as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

  • interprets and/or composes correspondence requiring knowledge ofdepartmental regulations, procedures, practices, andpolicies;
  • participates in interviewing, training, and evaluating staff;
  • performs duties of the lower levels;
  • performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) fromthe categories below:
    1. Course work in accounting, as measured by the followingconversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 9 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
    2. Course work in any discipline as measured by the followingconversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
      • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen (18)months
      • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
    3. Work experience in bookkeeping, office support, or closelyrelated experience.

Illinois Residency Requirement:

Pursuant to the StateUniversities Civil Service System, candidates must be a currentIllinois resident.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing:

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
