The Manager of Accounting – Revenue is responsible for the accurate, timely, and well-controlled execution of revenue accounting and reporting in a complex, project- and service-based environment. This role leads the monthly revenue close, reviews contracts and revenue recognition conclusions under ASC 606, oversees reconciliations and supporting documentation, and follows through on issues with finance and business partners. The position supervises the revenue accounting team and partners closely with Operations, Project Management, Billing, FP&A, Treasury, and IT to support year-end close, the annual audit, process improvement, and significant back-office system changes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue close, including preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, supporting schedules, documented sign-offs, and variance analyses.

  • Review revenue recognition for project-, service-, unit-, milestone-, percentage-of-completion-, and activity-based arrangements and document conclusions in accordance with ASC 606 and company policy.

  • Review contracts, change orders, estimates, accruals, judgments, and nonstandard transactions; maintain consistent methodologies and supporting documentation for related accounting entries.

  • Reconcile contract terms and operational activity to project performance, billing, revenue recognition, contract assets, unbilled revenue, and general ledger results, and resolve identified differences.

  • Prepare and review recurring revenue reports, investigate variances, connect results to operational drivers and forecasts, and summarize significant items for accounting and finance leadership.

  • Partner with Operations, Project Management, Billing, FP&A, Treasury, and IT to research discrepancies, improve data quality, clarify handoffs, and resolve revenue accounting issues.

  • Execute and improve revenue accounting policies, procedures, review standards, and key internal controls, maintaining appropriate evidence of performance.

  • Maintain the revenue close calendar, assign and review work, track open items, communicate status, and elevate matters requiring leadership input.

  • Coordinate revenue-related audit requests, prepare and review supporting schedules, maintain audit-ready documentation, and respond to follow‑up questions promptly.

  • Supervise and develop revenue accounting team members through clear priorities, regular review, coaching, feedback, and accountability.

  • Support ERP, billing, project, and financial system changes by documenting accounting requirements, completing data validation and testing, identifying control considerations, and assisting users during implementation.

  • Maintain a prioritized pipeline of automation, reporting, process, control, data, and system improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.

Qualifications/Skills

This person can research accounting questions, organize a dependable close, maintain clear documentation, resolve routine issues with business partners, and elevate significant matters to accounting leadership. Direct utility pole inspection experience is not required; the manager must be able to quickly learn how contract terms, project activity, field production, billing, and systems affect reported revenue.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field; CPA or equivalent professional qualification preferred.

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands‑on responsibility for complex revenue accounting and experience supervising staff or leading workstreams.

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and ASC 606, with experience evaluating contracts, estimates, accruals, judgments, and nonstandard transactions.

  • Experience in field services, engineering, infrastructure, utility services, construction, industrial services, or another labor‑intensive project or service environment preferred.

  • Ability to evaluate commercial terms and operating data within unit-, milestone-, percentage‑of‑completion-, project-, and activity‑based revenue models and translate findings into clear accounting conclusions.

  • Strong analytical skills with large and complex data sets; advanced Excel skills and experience with Power BI or similar reporting tools preferred.

  • Experience supporting ERP, billing, project, or financial system implementations, including process documentation, requirements definition, data validation, testing, controls, and user adoption.

  • Working knowledge of internal controls, technical accounting documentation, account reconciliations, and external audit support.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain revenue matters and recommendations to finance and operating partners.

  • Organized and accountable approach, with the judgment to balance technical requirements, materiality, business context, deadlines, and competing priorities.

Immediate Priorities
  • Develop a working understanding of revenue streams, contract structures, operating drivers, systems, team responsibilities, and current close performance.

  • Take ownership of the revenue close calendar, team assignments, account reconciliations, review procedures, open‑item tracking, and documented sign-offs.

  • Review revenue recognition and accrual methodologies for consistency, document identified issues, and recommend practical remediation for approval.

  • Improve recurring revenue reporting by connecting recognized revenue with operational activity, billing, collections, forecasts, customer commitments, and project performance.

  • Resolve priority accounting discrepancies, control gaps, data‑quality issues, and documentation needs before year‑end close and the annual audit.

  • Clarify day‑to‑day responsibilities, handoffs, escalation paths, and meeting routines across Accounting, Operations, Project Management, Billing, FP&A, Treasury, and IT.

  • Maintain a practical improvement roadmap covering revenue processes, controls, reporting, data, automation, and systems; assign owners, track due dates, and report progress to accounting leadership.
