Job description

As Accounting Manager, you will own and oversee the accounting processes that keep a growing company running smoothly, with particular emphasis on customer contracts, billing, and accounts receivable, accounting close, financial reporting, and process improvement. This role goes beyond transactional accounting. You will be expected to review and analyze accounting activity, identify discrepancies, understand the underlying business drivers, and take ownership of resolving issues. You will also help develop scalable accounting processes and internal controls as the organization continues to grow. You will work closely with senior leadership and oversee the development of a Staff Accountant. If you enjoy asking thoughtful questions, solving problems, improving systems, and having the autonomy to take ownership of your work, you will thrive in this role.

What You Will Do
  • Customer Invoice Management: Oversee the preparation, review, and timely delivery of customer invoices, ensuring invoices are accurate and consistent with contractual terms before they are issued. Maintain and improve invoice templates and billing workflows as needed, including billing rates, payment terms, invoice requirements, and other financial provisions. Ensure those terms are accurately reflected in billing and accounting processes.
  • Accounts Receivable: Monitor and manage open accounts receivable, review aging reports, coordinate collection efforts, investigate discrepancies, and resolve customer billing issues.
  • Accounting Close: Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accounting records are accurate, complete, appropriately reviewed, and closed on time.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and review financial statements, account reconciliations, general ledger activity, supporting schedules, and other financial reporting. Analyze accounting activity to identify discrepancies, trends, and areas requiring additional review.
  • Process Development & Internal Controls: Develop, document, implement, and continuously improve accounting processes and internal controls that support accuracy, efficiency, scalability, and company growth.
  • Annual Filings & Compliance: Manage applicable annual business filings, including 1099s, annual reports, franchise and excise taxes, and other required filings.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop the Staff Accountant by establishing clear expectations, reviewing work, providing coaching and growth conversations, and creating an environment that balances autonomy with accountability.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with senior leadership and other departments to understand business needs, resolve accounting and billing issues, improve processes, and support informed business decisions.
What You Need
  • 3–5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, and accounting close processes.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and analyzing accounting work, not solely processing transactions.
  • Experience reviewing customer contracts and interpreting billing rates, payment terms, amendments, and other financial provisions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify discrepancies and determine their underlying causes.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high degree of ownership and accountability.
  • Ability to operate independently in a hands-off environment while recognizing when an issue should be escalated.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Intellectual curiosity and business acumen: You ask thoughtful questions, seek to understand the “why” behind accounting issues, and want to understand how accounting activity connects to the broader business.
  • A builder's mindset: You are comfortable with ambiguity, look for opportunities to improve existing processes, and are motivated to help build scalable systems as the organization grows.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous management, supervisory, or team-lead experience, including experience reviewing or overseeing another accounting professional's work.
  • Experience within healthcare or another complex, service-based organization.
  • Experience developing or improving accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct, Bill.com, ADP, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience working in a growing organization where accounting processes and systems continue to evolve.
What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means more than completing accounting tasks. You proactively review work for accuracy, identify issues before they become larger problems, seek to understand the business behind the numbers, and take ownership of solutions.

You will help build an accounting function where contracts translate accurately into invoices, invoices translate accurately into revenue, financial information can be trusted, and processes continue to improve as the company grows.

What We’ll Provide
  • Hybrid work environment
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) with company match.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Participation in the company's Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
