Job summary

Jobtailor seeks an experienced Senior Accountant to oversee daily accounting operations for a portfolio of senior housing communities in Massachusetts. You will manage the close process, review journals, reconciliations, and balance sheets while ensuring GAAP compliance and accurate financial reporting to the Director of Finance and Executive Directors.

The role requires 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience with leadership, strong Excel and ERP skills (Yardi or Workday preferred), and

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • Five to seven years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Two or more years of supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience with nonprofit, healthcare, affordable housing, real estate, or property accounting strongly preferred.
  • Experience with HUD, LIHTC, or other affordable housing programs preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and employee development skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with ERP or property management software; Yardi and/or Workday preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration across departments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations for a portfolio of senior housing communities.
  • Manage the monthly close process and ensure timely, accurate financial statements.
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Analyze operating results and investigate budget-to-actual variances.
  • Ensure general ledger accuracy and GAAP compliance.
  • Prepare and review financial reports for the Director of Finance and Executive Directors.
  • Maintain fixed asset and depreciation records.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop Staff Accountants and Financial Coordinators.
  • Balance workloads, support cross‑training, recruitment, onboarding, and professional development.
  • Oversee accounting activities for multiple affordable housing communities.
  • Monitor reserves, escrow accounts, restricted cash, bank reconciliations, and cash management.
  • Coordinate management fee calculations and intercompany transactions.
  • Coordinate annual financial statement and compliance audits.
  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor requests.
  • Ensure compliance with HUD, LIHTC, MassHousing, DHCD, and nonprofit reporting requirements.
  • Support surplus cash calculations, reserve draw requests, and regulatory financial reporting.
  • Assist with budgets, forecasting, and long‑term financial planning.
  • Improve accounting processes, internal controls, systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Build relationships with community leadership, corporate departments, vendors, and residents.
  • Communicate financial information clearly to financial and non‑financial stakeholders.
  • Participate in special projects, system implementations, organisational initiatives, and strategic priorities
