Job description

Accounting Director

Bishop Street Underwriters

Reports To: Controller

Location: Chicago, South Florida, or Hybrid Office/Remote

Employment Type: Full-Time, Regular

About Bishop Street Underwriters

Bishop Street Underwriters (BSU) is a specialty insurance holding company with a portfolio of 10+ operating businesses (OpCos) operating across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom with 400+ employees. Since launching in 2023, BSU has grown through acquisition and de novo build-out into an $800M+ gross written premium platform. The Accounting and Financial Reporting function is central to that scale: it gives every OpCo a shared, scalable financial backbone so each business can focus on underwriting excellence.

Position Summary

The Accounting Director reports to the Controller and works closely with the CFO, Bishop Street C-Suite and Operating Companies to support the Accounting and Financial Reporting functions across the platform. You will be responsible for supporting the monthly, quarterly and annual close processes and ensuring the accuracy, integrity and timeliness of the Company’s accounting and financial reporting.

The Accounting Director will oversee key accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, account roll forwards, intercompany accounting and accounts payable review and approval. You will also support complex accounting matters, special projects, and the integration and cleanup of acquired companies — work that looks a little different each time, since the accounting environment itself keeps evolving as new entities, systems, and intercompany relationships come onto the platform.

Key requirements of the position include strong technical accounting skills, exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, organization and a strong sense of urgency. The ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines is essential. You will work closely with the Controller and broader finance team to ensure compliance with GAAP and established accounting policies and procedures and to support accurate and timely financial reporting across the platform.

This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated, entrepreneurial-minded accounting professional to play a key role in a fast-growing, private equity-backed company. With strong organic growth, multiple inorganic opportunities and integration at any given time, and new strategic initiatives on the horizon, the company is scaling rapidly — which means the accounting function itself is still being built out, giving this person real input into how it takes shape. Backed by a top-tier PE firm, this role offers exposure to the C-Suite and the opportunity to help build and scale the Company’s accounting infrastructure, and the chance to grow alongside a dynamic, collaborative and high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Controller in managing monthly, quarterly and annual close processes and ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting
  • Prepare and review journal entries, ensuring appropriate documentation and adherence to GAAP and Company accounting policies
  • Prepare and review account reconciliations, research reconciling items and prepare correcting journal entries as needed
  • Prepare and maintain account roll forwards and supporting schedules
  • Reconcile and oversee intercompany activities and balances across the Company and its Operating Companies
  • Assist with complex accounting matters, technical accounting analyses and accounting cleanup projects
  • Review and approve accounts payable activity and support the timely and accurate processing of invoices and payments
  • Assist with the preparation and review of consolidated financial reporting and other internal and external reporting requirements
  • Support the Controller and external advisors with audit requests and other financial reporting requirements
  • Assist with the integration and accounting setup of newly acquired companies, including account reconciliations, opening balances and cleanup activities as the platform continues to add entities
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, procedures and controls to support accurate, consistent and scalable financial reporting
  • Maintain appropriate accounting documentation and support compliance with Company policies, GAAP and other applicable reporting requirements
  • Partner with the Controller, CFO and Operating Companies on accounting matters, special projects and other initiatives as needed
Qualifications

The ideal candidate is technically strong, detail-oriented, analytical and highly collaborative. We seek an engaging team player who takes ownership of responsibilities, works effectively with minimal supervision and consistently demonstrates integrity, sound judgment, enthusiasm and resilience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements
  • Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, roll forwards and intercompany reconciliations
  • Experience supporting month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes
