The City of Healdsburg is currently recruiting for an Accounting Assistant I/II in the Finance Department!
This front-counter position at City Hall supports the Utility Billing division and plays a key role in providing responsive customer service to the community. Primary responsibilities include processing payments, assisting customers by phone, email, and in person, filing, data entry, and conducting account research as needed. Placement of the individual at a particular level will be based on a combination of factors including education, experience, and certifications. Ideal candidates will have experience with the Office 365 suite, standard office equipment and phone systems, cash handling, and customer service. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are highly desirable.
The Accounting Assistant I/II position utilizes a 9/80 schedule with alternating Fridays off. The hours for this position are 7:45 AM to 5:45 PM, with a 1 hour lunch.
To perform a variety of financial and accounting support duties for assigned accounting functions; to process payments for City services; to perform general office duties; and to provide clerical support to an assigned supervisor.
This is the entry level class in the clerical Accounting Assistant series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. The Accountant Assistant I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.
This is the journey level class in the clerical Accounting Assistant series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Accounting Assistant in that the latter performs the more difficult accounting and specialized financial duties and provides technical and functional supervision over assigned staff.

Maintain and organize accurate accounting, billing and related records; review reports; and provide customer service. Intermittently, review and evaluate documents related to department operations; observe, identify and problem solve office operations and procedures; understand, interpret and explain department policies and procedures; explain operations and problem solve issues for the public and with staff. On a continuous basis, sit at desk for long periods of time or stand at public counter; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone; write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 10 pounds or less. Review and balance payment records. Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority. Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software. Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities. Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner. License and Certificate
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain such required license(s) may be cause for disciplinary action. In addition to the qualifications for the Accounting Assistant I:
Basic government accounting principles, financial record keeping processes. Billing processes used for utility and related municipal services provided to residential and commercial customers. Relevant local, State, and Federal laws, rules and regulations related to area of assignment.
