Job summary

Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited "United States (U.S.)" university or may substitute for a completed degree with 18 accounting credit hours plus relevant experience;
  • Financial reporting and accounting experience;
  • Experience with complex reconciliations of separate financial systems;
  • Ability to analyze and apply accounting theory to complex transactions;
  • Proficient in Excel including an attention to detail;
  • Experience with problem solving and analytical writing;
  • Ability to interpret existing and new federal, state, and local regulations and policies to ensure continued accounting and reporting compliance
  • Experience with the Uniform Statewide Accounting System ( USAS )
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • 4 years of professional and progressive experience managing in a complex organization
  • Knowledge of State Comptroller reporting requirements and guidelines
  • Experience with investment accounting
  • Experience with an ERP system (Workday, SAP , or Banner)
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with internal and external customers

Job Description

Performs advanced, professional accounting functions that support the integrity of the university’s financial reporting and accounting operations. Responsible for state appropriations, cash and investment accounting activities, including oversight of daily payment processing, reconciliation of financial data between the university’s general ledger and the Uniform Statewide Accounting System ( USAS ), and participation in year-end financial reporting for the Annual Financial Report ( AFR ). Ensures compliance with governmental GAAP , State of Texas requirements, and other applicable accounting standards and regulations.

Job Duties

  • Manage and oversee the institution’s revenue appropriations and serve as the institutional liaison with the State Comptroller’s Office on accounting matters
  • Review monthly reconciliations between the university’s general ledger system and the Uniform Statewide Accounting System ( USAS )
  • Oversee bank reconciliations and investment accounting
  • Participate in the monthly and year-end closing processes by preparing financial statements and reviewing the work of others
  • Develop, monitor, and report key financial ratios and metrics
  • Interpret and implement federal, state, system, and university policies and regulations
  • Design and document internal control procedures
  • Research and resolve financial reporting issues
  • Provide necessary training and technical assistance to staff
  • Assist with hiring decisions and conduct annual staff performance evaluations
  • Other duties as assigned
