Job summary

The City of Idaho Falls is seeking an entry-level Accountant I to perform professional accounting and financial analysis, monthly reporting, internal control development, and budget preparation for city departments and the annual financial report.   • Analyze account activity and reconcile general ledger and subsidiary ledgers to ensure data integrity.
  • Assist with payroll processing and reporting.
  • Prepare year-end audit work papers and coordinate with auditors.

Job Description:

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for an entry-level Accountant I. This position performs a variety of professional accounting and financial analysis, monthly reporting, development of internal controls, and budget preparation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under general supervision of the Finance Director or designee. Job duties may include the following:

  • Assists in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and budget for all City departments, Council, and for the City’s annual financial audit.
  • Prepares journal entries for city financials. Such entries may include interdepartmental transfers, expenditures and revenues; depreciation, receivables and payables, etc.
  • Analyze account activities and identify corrections to assist in monitoring the integrity of general ledger and subsidiary ledger entries; perform related adjustments and reconciliations.
  • Assists with preparing, processing, and reporting payroll related functions.
  • Prepare year-end audit work papers and perform internal procedures needed to ensure the integrity and quality of financial accounting records.
  • Works with auditors to provide requested documentation and information.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual budgets and the annual comprehensive financial report.
  • Assists in reviewing, developing, and auditing other departments for compliance with internal controls, financial, city, and personnel policies.
  • Works with auditors; pulls the documentation needed and verifies entries into the financial system; Assists other departments with problems; answers questions when needed.
  • Cross-train with other Finance staff to become familiar with duties and assignments to provide support when assigned.
  • Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. 1. Education and Experience:
    • A. Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or public finance or anticipation to graduate within six months of hire in aforementioned degrees; OR B. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. 2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Working knowledge of principles and practices of municipal accounting; working knowledge of standard office procedures; working knowledge of accounting systems; Working knowledge of Excel spreadsheet program; some knowledge of City fiscal management goals and objectives. Ability to prepare complete and accurate reports and statements of a complex nature; ability to perform detailed work involving written or numerical data; ability to make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately; ability to analyze accounting systems and procedures; ability to adapt to unique accounting problems where established procedures do not always apply; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to develop effective working relationships with Department Heads, Supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

  4. 4. Work Environment: Typical office setting with typical climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, not generally involving muscular strain. Job functions normally require talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
Pay Range:

$65,145.60 - $70,886.40
