Job summary

City of Idaho Falls is seeking an entry-level Accountant I to perform professional accounting and financial analysis, monthly reporting, development of internal controls, and budget preparation under the supervision of the Finance Director.

Responsibilities include preparing monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and budgets for all city departments and for the annual audit, preparing journal entries, payroll reporting, and assisting auditors with documentation.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or public finance or anticipation to graduate within six months of hire in aforementioned degrees; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of municipal accounting principles and practices; proficiency with Excel and accounting systems.

Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and budgets for all City departments, Council, and for the annual financial audit.
• Prepare journal entries including interdepartmental transfers, expenditures and revenues; depreciation, receivables and payables.
• Analyze account activities and perform corrections and reconciliations for general and subsidiary ledgers.
• Assist with payroll processing and reporting.
• Prepare year-end audit work papers and coordinate with auditors to provide requested documentation.
• Assist in preparing annual budgets and the comprehensive financial report.
• Review departments for compliance with internal controls and city policies.
• Cross-train with Finance staff to provide support as needed.
