Job summary

Granger Waste Services in Lansing, MI is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to manage the general ledger, monthly close, and financial reporting. You will ensure GAAP compliance, assist with audits, and drive process improvements with strong Excel and cost accounting knowledge.

This is a full-time exempt role offering stability and growth within a community-focused organization. Location: Lansing, MI; Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; Exempt status; Collaborative team environment

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of accounting experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with accounting systems and financial reporting tools.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and cost accounting principles.
  • Experience preparing financial statements, performing reconciliations and analyzing financial data.
  • Experience supporting audits and process improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Own general ledger functions including reconciliations, journal entries and financial statement preparation.
  • Review and analyze account balances to identify anomalies and ensure accuracy.
  • Manage the reconciliation and accuracy of all account balances.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
  • Ensure financial reporting complies with company policies and accounting standards.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Assist with budget preparation and financial forecasting.
  • Perform variance analysis and provide insights to support business decisions.
  • Monitor financial trends and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support strategic planning through accurate financial analysis and reporting.
  • Oversee cash management processes, reconciliations and reporting.
  • Analyze variances and ensure accuracy of cash-related transactions.
  • Maintain and track fixed assets, including depreciation, insurance, licensing and reporting.
  • Conduct internal audits and recommend process improvements.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and provide required documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal financial policies.
  • Support tax reporting and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Lead financial software projects and system enhancements.
  • Identify and implement automation opportunities to improve efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain accounting procedures, documentation and training materials.
  • Collaborate with departments across the organization to streamline accounting processes.
  • Serve as a key contact for accounting-related questions and issues.
  • Mentor and support accounting team members.
  • Promote best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders across the business.

What You'll Do
Financial Reporting & General Ledger

Required Experience
What We're Looking For
