Job summary

Council on Aging in Union County in Monroe, NC seeks a part-time Non-Profit Accountant to manage day-to-day financial operations, fund accounting, grant tracking, and compliance. You will maintain the general ledger, process payroll, and prepare financial statements for the CEO and Board.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s in Accounting, 3+ years of accounting experience including 1–2 years in nonprofit fund accounting, proficiency with QuickBooks Online, and a solid understanding of nonprofit

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required.
• 3+ years of professional accounting experience, including 1–2 years in nonprofit fund accounting.
• Proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
• Strong understanding of nonprofit GAAP, net asset classifications, and allocation of functional expenses.
• CPA or CMA is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

• Fund Accounting & General Ledger: maintain the general ledger, AP/AR, and payroll.
• Financial Reporting: prepare monthly financial statements for the CEO and Board.
• Budgeting & Forecasting: assist leadership with annual budgets and program budgets.
• Compliance & Audit Prep: ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations; prepare audit docs and IRS Form 990.
• Internal Controls: strengthen controls to safeguard assets.

Job description

We are seeking a Part-time detail-oriented and conscientious Non-Profit Accountant to manage our day-to-day financial operations. In this role, you will handle fund accounting, grant tracking, financial reporting, and compliance. The ideal candidate has a strong background in accounting standards

specific to non-profit organizations (GAAP/FASB) and is passionate about using their financial expertise to support our mission.

Core Responsibilities

• Fund Accounting & General Ledger: Maintain the general ledger, manage accounts payable/receivable, and process payroll.
• Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly financial statements or the CEO and the Board of Directors.
• Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist leadership in developing annual organizational budgets and program-specific budgets.
• Compliance & Audit Prep: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local non-profit regulations. Prepare all documentation for the annual audit and IRS Form 990 filing.
• Internal Controls: Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.

Qualifications & Skills

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
• Experience: 3+ years of professional accounting experience, with at least 1-2 years specifically in non-profit fund accounting preferred.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
• Knowledge: Strong understanding of non-profit GAAP, net asset classifications (with/without donor restrictions), and allocation of functional expenses.
• Attributes: High integrity, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to communicate financial data clearly to non-financial staff and board members.
• Certification: CPA or CMA is a plus but not required.
