(Job #543049) Accompanist II, Salary Range: $3,220 - $5,642. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt 10/12 pay plan (work 10 months of the year with pay and benefits over 12 months) permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Music Department. Position Summary:

Under the lead work direction of the Dance, Music, and Theatre Chair, and faculty, provides accompaniment on piano, harpsichord, or organ for choral and operatic rehearsals and performances, for ensembles, students, faculty, and guest artists, classes, lessons, solo singers, instrumentalists, and chamber ensembles. Provides coaching for solo singers, instrumentalists, ensembles., and student composers.

Key Responsibilities:

Accompany performing groups such as University Singers, Mad River Transit Singers, Humboldt Chorale, Opera Workshop and other musical productions in rehearsals and performances.

  • Accompany choral groups during rehearsals, at concerts, special events, competitions, and music recitals, tours, and local school sites.
  • Assist the choir teacher by providing warm-up exercises and working with small groups to learn music parts.
  • Sight read accompaniments in rehearsals, improvise and transpose music to other
  • keys to fit the vocal range of individual students.
  • Rehearse with large choral groups, vocal sections, and soloists; play full and sectional accompaniment; provide high-level musical instruction assistance in diction, rhythms and memorization of parts.
  • Participates in out-of-town music performance events, and competitions; assist faculty with student supervision while participating in performances and competitions.
  • Analyze assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g., correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics) to ensure efficient use of rehearsal time.
  • Prepare for piano accompaniment outside of rehearsal time; come prepared to rehearsals and classes to accompany musical selections.
  • Make recordings of accompaniments and/or parts for student practice

Rehearse with, coach, and play during studio lessons for student instrumentalists in preparations for performance.

  • Provide high-level musical instruction assistance in rhythms and interpretation of music.
  • Sight read accompaniments in rehearsals, improvise and transpose music to other keys to fit the vocal range of individual students.
  • Analyze assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g., correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics) to ensure efficient use of rehearsal time.
  • Prepare for piano accompaniment outside of rehearsal time; come prepared to rehearsals and classes to accompany musical selections.
  • Make recordings of accompaniments for student practice

Accompany student singers and instrumentalists in public performances.

  • Exhibit professional and stage etiquette to serve as a model of professionalism at musical productions.

Perform student compositions in classes and concerts

  • Practice for performances of student compositions.
  • Exhibit professional and stage etiquette to serve as a model of professionalism at musical productions.

Rehearse and perform as a collaborative pianist with faculty and guest artists in solo and chamber music performances.

  • Analyze assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g., correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics) to ensure efficient use of rehearsal time.
  • Come prepared to rehearsals..
  • Participate in out-of-town music performance events.

Organize rehearsal and performance schedules and sheet music.

  • Prepare and maintain binders of current music accompaniment for each ensemble and performer.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests for information from students, faculty and staff regarding concerts, recitals, or other events.

  • Ability to coach lyric diction
  • Ability to sight read keyboard music well, including open choral scores.
  • Ability to perform accompaniments in public at the professional level on piano.
  • Knowledge of vocal, choral and instrumental repertoire.
  • Ability to teach and work well with others.
  • Ability to make audio recordings..
  • Ability to organize schedules, including rooms which are used for coaching purposes, keeping track of hours, keeping a library of music available, using a computer to print out rehearsal schedules, etc.
  • Good communication and people skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

Experience which has led to a thorough familiarity with accompanying choral groups and soloists (instrumental and vocal). Experience in coaching performing artists is required.

And

Education:

Special training or coursework that would facilitate composing and improvising music and/or coaching and accompanying.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced skill in playing piano as an Accompanist.
  • Ability to sight read keyboard music well, including open choral scores.
  • Ability to perform accompaniments in public on harpsichord and organ.
  • Master’s of Music in Performance and/or Accompanying preferred.
