Job description

Access Services Technician - Fall 2026

Position Summary:

Access Services Technicians provide support to the Access Services department of Falvey Library.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide in‑person customer service at the library service desk, conduct circulation transactions, and answer patron questions.
  • Search for materials in the library catalog for patrons and direct patron to reference librarians for research assistance.
  • Process requests for the Pickup & Go holds service and answer incoming phone calls to the library service desk.
  • Shelve returned books, maintain book stacks, move book carts, lift and carry books, and search for missing books.
  • Process interlibrary loan materials, update records in specialized library software, scan pages from journals and books for electronic delivery, ship materials to other libraries via Fed‑Ex software, open incoming packages and sort contents for processing.
  • Retrieve materials from local and remote locations; perform light clerical work, routine office tasks, and run errands as directed.
  • Participate and contribute to library projects assigned by Access Services staff.

Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and reliability.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with great accuracy and consistency.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to handle difficult situations; customer service experience preferred.
  • Experience using hardware (laptops, PCs, printers, scanners, mobile devices), software (Windows, Mac, web browsers, Webmail, Brightspace), and wireless network access preferred.
  • Familiarity with the library’s catalog, journals, databases, and web search engines preferred.
  • Cross training in multiple areas required.
  • Preference given to students with availability in evenings and weekends.

Work Schedule:

  • Monday – Thursday: 8am-12am
  • Friday: 8am-5pm
  • Saturday: 9am-5pm
  • Sunday: 12pm-12am

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking up to 4 hours at a time; frequent bending and lifting; able to lift 30 lbs. of library materials while moving/walking; pushing and pulling a book truck (4 wheels) of library materials weighing between 50 and 100 lbs.; ability to climb several flights of stairs occasionally.

Wage Rate: $11.25/hour
