Job summary

Virginia Highlands Community College seeks two on-site Academic Tutors in English & Humanities for the MARC, Learning Resources Division. Positions require evening/weekend availability and a focus on tutoring current students in English, basic math, chemistry, biology, and citation styles.

Responsibilities include greeting visitors, scheduling tutoring, maintaining FERPA-compliant records, and assisting with MARC/LRC programs.

Qualifications

  • Grade of no less than B in the desired subject (no C, D, F, W, I)
  • Prior tutoring/teaching/student support experience
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes 29 hours per week
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Leadership qualities that help the tutor be on task and in charge during sessions with students
  • Computer skills including working knowledge of AI and Large Language Models, working knowledge of citation formatting and conventions (including MLA and APA), including Microsoft Office programs and Google docs.

Responsibilities

  • Greet students, faculty, staff and visitors entering the MARC
  • Assist students needing academic support in English, math up to Calculus II, chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology, and citation formats
  • Direct students to MARC coordinator for tutoring appointments and help set appointments
  • Check students in and maintain session records
  • Answer Teams calls promptly and transfer when appropriate
  • Assist with receipt of new materials and organize the MARC space
  • Maintain FERPA confidentiality and professional conduct
  • Assist MARC coordinator with events and programming
  • Support LRC staff as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Description

Virginia Highlands Community College serves our community by providing quality and affordable education, training, and cultural activities through an array of flexible, diverse programs that enable community members to succeed today and in the future.

Job Description: To provide tutoring services for students currently enrolled in classes at the college, and to address general needs of the college. Assist faculty, staff, students and visitors while at Virginia Highlands Community College. Provide administrative, outreach, and clerical support to the MARC and the library as needed.

  • Greets students, faculty, staff and visitors upon entry into the MARC
  • Assists students who need academic support in the MARC in approved subject area(s) (where the tutor has earned a B or better) in the following subjects: English, basic math up to Calculus II, chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology, citation in MLA and/or APA , basic ITE coursework, and any other subjects the tutor may specialize in.
  • Direct students, faculty, and staff to the MARC coordinator to make tutoring appointments, and assist in making appointments as needed
  • Check students in upon arrival and maintain records of sessions upon beginning any/all tutoring
  • Promptly and politely serve patrons, students, faculty, and staff in the MARC and elsewhere in the LRC and on campus as needed
  • Promptly and politely answer Teams calls and respond to questions, refer, and/or transfer the call as appropriate
  • Assist with receipt of new materials when needed. Duties may include unpacking large and small boxes and carrying materials to shelves.
  • Maintain confidentiality when assisting students and abide by all FERPA regulations
  • Sign in students upon beginning any/all tutoring
  • Assist the MARC coordinator with programming/events
  • Maintain the physical area of the MARC by organizing and tidying the space
  • Assist the LRC staff as needed.

Special Assignments
