Job summary

Michigan School for the Deaf in Michigan is seeking an Academic Support Substitute for the 2026-2027 school year to provide reliable classroom coverage and uphold instructional continuity.

You will deliver teacher‑prepared lessons, supervise students, support small groups, complete attendance and incident reports, and assist with behavior tracking and MSD growth program activities, in a compliance‑minded environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Experience working with school-aged children in a Deaf school preferred.
• Fluency in American Sign Language required or strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

Job Description

Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) is a program that serves Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their families throughout the State of Michigan. Programming and services are provided to both day students and students in our student housing. This position will report to the Principal at Michigan School for the Deaf.

The Academic Support Substitute supports the academic program by providing consistent, reliable coverage for instructional and support staff absences. This position ensures continuity of learning by delivering prepared lessons, maintaining a productive classroom environment, and assisting with various academic or operational needs throughout the building.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide classroom instruction based on teacher‑prepared lesson plans.
• Provide coverage for paraprofessionals, office staff, or program‑related activities when necessary.
• Maintain a safe, inclusive, and orderly learning environment.
• Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, common areas, or during transitions as needed.
• Support academic programming by assisting with small‑group instruction, intervention activities, or enrichment when not assigned to a classroom.
• Follow established building procedures, schedules, and expectations.
• Communicate effectively with staff, administrators, and students.
• Manage student behavior using program‑aligned expectations and protocols.
• Complete required documentation such as attendance and incident reports.
• Assist with other duties as assigned, including coverage for paraprofessionals, office staff, or program‑related activities when necessary.
• Provide clerical support to the leadership team to oversee behavior tracking, credentialing, and MSD growth program support.

Other Duties as Assigned

• Help to support lunch supervision and provide coverage for aide breaks.
• Perform additional tasks or responsibilities as directed by leadership to support department operations, organizational goals, or emergent staffing needs.
• Participate in meetings, training, or special projects as requested.
• Adapt responsibilities based on changing priorities or circumstances.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Experience working with school aged children in a Deaf school
• Knowledge of employment practices and relevant regulations.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Must be fluent in American Sign Language

State of Michigan Employees/MSD Contracted Employees: Position duties should not conflict with work schedule, if so, annual leave must be requested. If absent, you will not be paid for that day.

Work Hours & Total Compensation:

• Academic Support Substitute will work from August 1-July 1 46 weeks of the year. Time off in one-week blocks per the MSD calendar noted as other will be during Christmas Break, Spring Break, and two weeks in the Summer {without pay or available paid time off may be used}.
• Monday- Friday 7:30am-4:00pm
• Payments are made on a bi-weekly basis from GECS payroll
• Hourly pay is $24.39

This is a one-year contracted position and pay will be determined based upon experience. The position will be renewed annually with the mutual agreement of both parties.
