Academic Support Aide
The Language Learning Center ( LLC ) supports New Mexico Highlands University ( NMHU ) students by offering supplemental instruction in both the languages of Spanish and ASL , which are taught in courses at NMHU . The supplemental instruction offered at the LLC by the tutors’ ranges from basic to intermediate. The LLC identifies personal and professional opportunities for students, who are studying those languages. In addition, the LLC provides a welcoming computer lab atmosphere for use by the campus community. The LLC also sponsors cultural enrichment events and extracurricular activities, online, which are open to the NMHU and Las Vegas community. The main purpose of the LLC is to provide services, to students of the Department of Languages and Culture, but the center welcomes all NMHU students. In this position, Academic Support Aides are to actively understand and support bilingualism, at all levels, and welcomes everyone to utilize the services at the LLC . ¡Bienvenidos!
Job description may include routine duties with no prior experience needed to be able to perform. May involve a modest degree of responsibility and judgment. Routine data entry; Answering phones; Making copies; Greeting customers; Taking messages; Managing confidential information; Maintain regular attendance; and, Perform other job duties as assigned.
Per the University’s Fall 2020 Regulations, prolonged use of computers, excessive typing, and lots of other sedentary tasks will be a result of the move to virtual/online instruction. If the University returns to face to face modalities, at any point during the time of your employment, please note that such onsite work may require the following physical demands: standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and lifting. For all tutoring whether virtually or in person, particularly for Spanish tutors, necessitates frequent speaking. ASL tutors can expect excessive use of their hands in addition to their voice.
There is no prior experience required for this position. Applicants need only to be NMHU students taking a minimum of six credit hours for the semester(s) in which they are applying for the position and possess a demonstrable high proficiency in the target languages of either Spanish or ASL or both.
