Job summary

Forsyth Technical Community College is seeking an Academic Resource Support Specialist to manage front desk operations and deliver exceptional student services at the Academic Success Center.

You will greet students, coordinate tutoring appointments, and assist with accessing tutoring resources while maintaining accurate records and supporting center programming.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Greet and welcome students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the Academic Success Center.
  • Answer, screen, and direct phone calls, emails, and in-person inquiries.
  • Provide information regarding tutoring and other academic support services.
  • Assist students with locating academic resources and services.
  • Maintain professional, welcoming front desk environment.
  • Assist with scheduling tutoring appointments and center activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of student visits and center usage.
  • Communicate schedule changes and important announcements.

Job Description Summary

The Academic Support Specialist – Front Desk serves as the primary point of contact for
students, faculty, staff, and visitors entering the Academic Success Center. This position
provides exceptional customer service, administrative support, and assistance with accessing
academic support services. The Academic Support Specialist helps create a welcoming,
professional, and student-centered environment while ensuring the daily operations of the front
desk run efficiently.
The ideal candidate is organized, approachable, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable
working with students from diverse academic and personal backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Basic computer proficiency, including email, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or
    similar software
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive student information appropriately.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in education, communication, business administration,

student services, or a related field

  • Previous experience in a college, university, technical college, tutoring center, student

services office, or customer service environment

  • Experience working with students in an educational setting
  • Experience with appointment scheduling systems, student information systems, or
    tutoring management platforms
  • Knowledge of campus resources and academic support services
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned by the Academic Success Center Director to ensure efficient and effective operation of the Center.

Front Desk & Customer Service
  • Greet and welcome students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the Academic Success Center.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for questions regarding Academic Success Center
    services.
  • Answer, screen, and direct phone calls, emails, and in-person inquiries.
  • Provide accurate information regarding tutoring, supplemental instruction, study
    resources, workshops, and other academic support services.
  • Assist students with locating appropriate academic resources and services.
  • Maintain a professional, welcoming, and student-friendly front desk environment.
  • Monitor the front desk and ensure students receive timely assistance.
Student Support
  • Assist students with scheduling, confirming, rescheduling, and canceling tutoring
    appointments.
  • Help students understand how to access tutoring and other Academic Success Center
    resources.
  • Check students in and out for tutoring appointments, workshops, and other center
    activities.
  • Assist students who may be unsure of which academic support service best meets their
    needs.
  • Provide basic assistance with technology used to access tutoring and academic support
    platforms.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus departments or resources when their needs fall
    outside the scope of the Academic Success Center.
Administrative Support
  • Maintain accurate records of student visits, tutoring appointments, and center usage.
  • Assist with maintaining tutor schedules and availability.
  • Monitor appointment calendars and identify scheduling conflicts or concerns.
  • Assist with daily opening and closing procedures for the Academic Success Center.
  • Maintain organized front desk materials, forms, brochures, and informational resources.
  • Assist with data entry, filing, copying, scanning, and other administrative tasks.
  • Prepare materials for workshops, events, meetings, and Academic Success Center
    programming.
  • Assist with tracking attendance and participation in Academic Success Center programs.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Communicate professionally with students, tutors, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Relay messages and important information to Academic Success Center staff and tutors.
  • Assist with communicating schedule changes, cancellations, and important
    announcements.
  • Work collaboratively with tutors and Academic Success Center staff to support student
    success.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality when handling student information.
Center Operations
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and professional front desk and student waiting area.
  • Monitor student traffic and maintain an environment conducive to learning.
  • Assist with center events, orientations, workshops, professional development activities,
    and outreach initiatives.
  • Report facility, technology, safety, or operational concerns to the appropriate staff
    member.
  • Follow all Academic Success Center policies, procedures, and institutional guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and daily operations of the
    Academic Success Center.
