Responsibilities

Job description

Academic Coordinator Hampton University - Hampton, VA The Ronald McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is a federal TRIO Program funded through the U. S. Department of Education to prepare low-income, first‑generation students and students from groups underrepresented in graduate education, for doctoral study. Hampton University’s Ronald McNair program will provide a cadre of twenty‑five program participants with a suite of academic year and summer research opportunities, free tutoring and Supplemental Instruction, peer mentoring, access to an annual graduate and professional schools tour, and ongoing faculty mentoring to improve retention, bachelor’s degree completion, graduate school enrollment, and postbaccalaureate degree conferral rates.

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; includes comprehensive fringe benefits package. This is a grant‑funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Recruit eligible students and Faculty Liaisons to refer exceptional candidates for doctoral study and to champion the Ronald McNair Scholars program amongst school deans and department chairpersons
  • Attend the STEM Chairs meeting on a monthly basis to identify and cultivate research opportunities for McNair participants
  • Maintain College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Certification Program and electronic records of all tutoring sessions.
  • Coordinate all tutorial and Supplemental Instruction training and evaluate monthly progress reports submitted by tutors to ensure timely intervention as warranted
  • Develop and implement targeted academic interventions for low-income, first‑generation college students
  • Assist students with class registration and regularly monitor students’ academic progress to make appropriate interventions and referrals as outlined in their Individual Research Plan
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to maintain reports on students’ semester and annual academic performance, track participants’ achievement each semester after graduation, and connect graduates to faculty mentors and support services on their respective campuses
  • Attend all Ronald McNair program staff meetings and submit reports as required
  • Review online tutoring session notes recorded by Peer Tutors after each tutoring session and complete a monthly progress report inclusive of interventions proposed for all students who are underperforming and a Tutor Payroll Contract Balance Report
  • All other duties as assigned by Supervisor
Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in education, guidance and counseling, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in education or counseling and demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with students from low‑income, first‑generation college backgrounds
  • Ability to perform multiple responsibilities simultaneously, to work in a self‑directed environment, and to plan and organize on both a daily and long‑term basis
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and objectives of the Ronald McNair program
