Job Description Summary

As a critical member of the CARE Team, the Academic Coach will be responsible for providing proactive and daily student outreach and support based on student need. Based on the Windward campus, and focusing on students in Career and Technical Education, an Academic Coach is a Del Mar College resource expert; the Academic Coach will make appointments with students who need basic college knowledge, enrollment information, and student support service details, in addition to connecting them to tutoring, counseling, academic advising, mentorship opportunities, career development events, disability services, the professional closet, the food pantry, community resources, and support for financial aid. Student development in reference to time management, organization, motivation, note taking, test taking, reading comprehension, and the setting up of study plans is a key goal of the Academic Coach. The efficiency, efficacy, productivity, and performance of the student are tantamount to success for the Academic Coach. The Academic Coach will also provide workshops for both students and faculty. All requested data shall be recorded by Academic Coach and provided in annual reports throughout the semester.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field.

One (1) year of related experience providing student services in higher education.

Knowledgeable in coaching traditional, non-traditional, developmental, and at-risk students in a higher education setting.

Ability to organize, manage, and research multiple projects.

Ability to work independently and self-directed within changing deadlines.

Ability to be well organized, task oriented, and flexible.

Ability to adapt to students and faculty.

Ability to mentor students and perform follow-up checkups with students.

Ability to utilize interpersonal skills to perform successfully in a multi-cultural environment.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software programs.

Ability to problem solve, make decisions, and manage conflict.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in related field.

Understanding of the college's general admissions requirements, financial aid requirements, department requirements, and academic support services.

Knowledge in interpreting the college's catalog.

Skilled in use of database related software such as Etrieve, Datatel, Colleague, Maxient, and Civitas.

Knowledge of FERPA laws.

Meet with students to explain and evaluate admissions processes to include assessment of test scores and support documentation.

Identify the appropriate educational and career options; assist with the analysis of each option including possible outcomes and implications.

Establish academic and career goals.

Coach students on appropriate placement, class design, and coursework.

Maintain regular contact/follow-up with students.

Establish an action plan for students to explore alternative careers and related programs.

Identify options for students to satisfy degree requirements.

Utilize case management principles of advocacy, assessment, and service facilitation to advance the achievement of goals and link students to the appropriate resources.

Utilize available and appropriate technology to monitor academic achievement of students toward degree completion.

Monitor caseloads to ensure that students are adequate progress.

Utilize technology to contact students regarding milestones.

Document ongoing case management activities
