Job summary

The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking an Academic Coach to mentor Act101 students and provide academic coaching across EQUIP programs in Pennsylvania.

The role includes advising, progress monitoring, and program administration, with opportunities to lead workshops and summer session teaching. Qualifications include a master's degree in education or related field and experience in student support or advising.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, student affairs, counseling or related field with at least one year of academic support or advising experience.
  • Bachelor's degree with significant relevant experience may be considered.
  • Experience with students from educationally disadvantaged or urban backgrounds preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational and detail orientation essential.
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends and during the EQUIP summer program.
  • Must be able to climb three flights of stairs several times per day.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor, advise, and role model for Act101 students.
  • Meet Act101 students regularly to monitor progress and develop success plans.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director to identify eligible students and engage them in the program.
  • Maintain accurate records of participation, contacts, and activities in line with guidelines.
  • Assist underperforming students and contribute to improvement programs.
  • Teach a course during the EQUIP summer program and support other activities.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and training of Peer Counselors for EQUIP.
  • Conduct workshops for Act101 or collaborate with staff on enrichment activities.
  • Publicize Act101 activities to students in a timely and effective manner.
  • Maintain records of programming expenses and assist with program administration.

Job description

Position Description

The Academic Coach provides mentoring, supportive counseling,academic coaching, and advising to students participating in Act101 (The Pennsylvania Higher Education Equal Opportunity Program),participates in the academic and holistic support program offeredto EQUIP academic bridge program students, and offers academiccoaching to the general student population.

Position Responsibilities
  1. Acts as a mentor, advisor, and role model to Act 101students.
  2. Meets with Act 101 students on a regular basis to monitoracademic progress and personal adjustment, develop plans forsuccess, and provide direct support (e.g., academic coaching).
  3. Works with the Assistant Director for Opportunity Programs toidentify Act 10-eligible students and engages students in theprogram.
  4. Maintains accurate and timely records of student programparticipation agreements, contacts and other program activities,ensuring that PHEAA guidelines regarding documentation arefollowed.
  5. Assists academically under-prepared or underperforming increating and following programs for improvement.
  6. During the summer EQUIP pre-college summer academic bridgeprogram, teaches one course (typically College Survival Skills) andassists with other student support and administrativeactivities.
  7. Participates in the recruitment, selection, and training ofPeer Counselors for the EQUIP summer academic bridge program.Assists with supervision when requested by the Assistant Directorfor Opportunity Programs.
  8. Conducts workshops for Act 101 students and/or collaborateswith other University staff to offer workshops and other enrichmentactivities for Act 101 and EQUIP students.
  9. Publicizes Act 101 program activities to students in a timelyand effective manner.
  10. Maintains accurate records of programming expenses.
  11. Assists with other aspects of Act 101 program administration asidentified by the Assistant Director for Opportunity Programs.

Status: Full-time, staff, 40 hours per week, 12 months peryear.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in education, student affairs, counseling or arelated field and a minimum of one year's experience in academicsupport, counseling, and/or advising in an institution of highereducation are strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree and significant relevantexperience may be considered.
  • Experience working with students from educationallydisadvantaged, low income, and urban backgrounds is preferred.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills, excellentinterpersonal skills, and organization and attention to detail areessential.
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends andthe entire duration of the EQUIP summer program (typically 4-5weeks late June through early August).
  • Must be able to climb three flights of stairs several timesaday.
