Job summary

The University of Utah is seeking an undergraduate Academic Advisor to provide proactive advising and guidance to a diverse student population, helping them plan courses and monitor progress toward graduation.

Under supervision, you will interpret university policies, facilitate degree navigation, and connect students with tutoring or additional resources to support their educational goals and degree completion.

Responsibilities

  • Meets with students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as degree navigation, course planning to graduation, registration, and other advising-related information relevant to regional academic advising and university initiatives.
  • Adheres to all university academic advising standards and practices.
  • Facilitates students’ academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
  • Actively engages in campus-based professional development.
  • Participates in the delivery of proactive advising strategies for assigned student populations on the basis of data analytic platforms.
  • Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms to monitor student progress and guide proactive student interventions.
  • Maintains students’ academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place.
  • Develops and presents academic advising programs designed to supplement or enhance academic success
  • Collects and disseminates information to students about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate
  • Assists students to register for their first term classes through regional practices and orientation.
  • Participates in relevant committees and professional development opportunities at the university and through professional academic advising organizations.

Job Summary

With direct supervision and in alignment with the Regional Model of Academic Advising and Career Coaching, this position provides undergraduate proactive academic advising to a diverse population of students regarding their academic planning and progress by utilizing professional advising and guidance skills. Interprets and explains university academic policy and procedure to assist students in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation.

This position will assist the University in promoting a climate of respect that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel safe, valued, welcomed, and respects all students in their quest for individual success through degree programs, certificates, majors, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
