Job summary

The University of Texas at Arlington seeks an Academic Advisor to deliver individual and group advisement to current and prospective students. You will provide professional guidance through a caseload, supporting retention and timely graduation.

You will advise across in-person, virtual, phone, and email channels, interpret transcripts and placement data, and document interactions in MyMav. The role requires institutional knowledge and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or four (4) years of an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master’s degree in related field is preferred.
  • One year of experience working with college students or adolescents in an advising capacity or the equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies for academic advising and resources from NACADA/TEXAAN.
  • Proficiency in using the University Catalog and student information systems.

The annual salary for this position ranges from $37,600 to $44,999 The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Purpose of Position

Delivers individual and group academic advisement to current and prospective students within UT Arlington. Provides professional advisement through an assigned student caseload, offering guidance and information to supplement and enhance academic experiences, student retention and completion.

Essential Functions
  • Provides academic advising to current and prospective students through in-person, virtual, phone, and email communication.
  • Guides students on degree requirements, course selection, and educational/career planning, while fostering informed decision-making and self-sufficiency in tracking progress, understanding policies, and utilizing available resources.
  • Monitors assigned student caseload by proactively supporting academic progress through outreach, degree verification, and timely resolution of holds and forms.
  • Reviews and interprets transcripts, placement results, and student data, while documenting advising interactions in MyMav according to best practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of federal, state, and University policies; stays informed on academic programs and student support services (e.g., counseling, tutoring); and provides referrals as appropriate.
  • Participates in campus events (such as New Maverick Orientation), advising meetings, professional conferences, and individual professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • One year of experience working with college students or adolescents in an advising capacity or the equivalent experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures for academic advising, including resources from professional associations such as NACADA and TEXAAN
  • Proficiency in using the University Catalog is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, information organization, problem-solving, time management, initiative, outreach, and proficiency with student information systems.
  • Ability to work professionally, collaboratively, and independently
  • Ability to proficiently use Microsoft Office Programs
Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
  • 10% Travel
  • Hybrid work environment (remote & office)
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend hours may be required to support departmental and university events.
Working Conditions
  • May work around standard office conditions.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
