Job summary

Salem State University is seeking an Academic Advisor to support students in developing their academic, career, and life plans. The advisor will provide counseling, help with course planning, and connect students to campus resources.

Collaboration with administrators, chairs, and advisors will be essential to student success. This onsite role in Salem, MA requires excellent organizational abilities and a commitment to supporting diverse student populations, with possible evening/weekend duties.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum two years of advising experience in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of contemporary sociological, psychological and academic problems faced by students.
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, PeopleSoft, Navigate 360, Canvas, and OnBase.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic, financial aid, and career counseling to students.
  • Assist the director of academic advising in all aspects of advising.
  • Retain students, clarify educational goals, and plan academic coursework.

Job description

Overview

Academic Advising provides the foundation upon which a student develops his or her academic plan. The academic advisor will assist the director of academic advising in all aspects of advising, including retaining students, clarifying educational goals, planning academic coursework, providing additional campus resources and understanding university policies. Academic advisors collaborate with other administrators, faculty chairs, and faculty advisors in support of student success. This position provides academic, financial aid, and career counseling to students, guiding them in the development of their academic, career and life goals.


Please Note:

This is a grant-funded position and continued employment is contingent upon ongoing grant funding.


Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Minimum two years of advising experience in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of contemporary sociological, psychological and academic problems faced by students
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, Peoplesoft, Navigate 360, Canvas, and OnBase

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle competing priorities

Working Location

This is an onsitepositionin Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities,which may require occasional work on evenings and weekends.


Employment is contingent upon a completed background and CORI check satisfactory to the university.
