Consumers Energy in Michigan is seeking an Automotive & Equipment Mechanic to join a second shift at the Saginaw Service Center. Under directive supervision, you will perform mechanical work on vehicles and equipment, inspecting hydraulic, braking, and engine systems and assisting senior mechanics.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED with 2+ years of heavy machinery experience, and the ability to obtain a CDL-X within 89 days.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with two or more years of experience as an A/E Mechanic or equivalent with hands on experience working with heavy machinery
• Candidates must pass a drug/alcohol test and may undergo background screening per FMCSA requirements
• Candidate must obtain a Commercial Driver's License with a Hazardous Endorsement (CDL-X) within 89 days of hire

Responsibilities

• Inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting and repairing hydraulic, brake, and engine systems
• Tuning engines with analyzers and diagnosing front-end suspension systems
• Performing routine inspections of aerial devices and minor repairs to vehicle bodies
• Work may include overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays during storms or emergencies

LOCATION & HOURS

This position is onsite at the Saginaw Service Center located in Saginaw, MI.

This is a second (2nd) shift union position with the requirement to work a minimum of 40 hours per week in a 24/7 operation.

GENERAL SUMMARY & JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Automotive & Equipment (A/E) Mechanic assists Master Automotive & Equipment Mechanic and, under directive supervision, performs mechanical work on vehicles and equipment at the grade indicated by such duties as:

• Inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting and repairing such systems as hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic and pneumatic brake systems, carburetion and emission systems, automatic transmission system, starting systems, charging systems, and electrical systems
• Tuning engines which include use of all types of analyzers
• Diagnosing, adjusting and repairing front-end suspension systems
• Diagnosing and repairing cylinder heads
• Making minor repairs to booms, buckets, and vehicle and equipment bodies
• Performing routine inspections of man lift and material lift aerial devices
• Performing incidental acetylene welding, cutting, heating, and brazing
• May be required irregular work schedules which may include working overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays related to storms and other business-related emergencies
• Performing other similar or related work as necessary

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• The individual shall exemplify safe work practices and comply with all of the company's safety standards and procedures
• He/she must utilize effective oral and written communication skills to effectively log plant status and interact with coworkers
• Temperature conditions within the plant can fluctuate and can reach above 100 degrees; in addition, should they need to evaluate outdoor equipment, the individual will be exposed to outdoor temperatures that fluctuate with weather conditions

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
• The noise level varies from normal to loud depending on construction activity and plant mode of operation

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma/GED with two (2) or more years of experience as an A/E Mechanic or equivalent with hands on experience working with heavy machinery
• Individuals applying for this position must successfully pass a test for controlled substance and alcohol and may be subject to a background screen in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
• Candidate must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License with a Hazardous Endorsement (CDL-X) within 89 days of hire

PREFERRED SKILLS

• State of Michigan, Secretary of State | SOS - Mechanic Certification
• National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification
• Automotive Degree from Accredited School
• Hands-on experience with Air Brakes and hydraulics
