Job summary

Consumers Energy is seeking an Automotive & Equipment (A/E) Mechanic to assist the Master A/E Mechanic, performing mechanical work on vehicles and equipment at the Hamilton Service Center in Hamilton, MI.

This is a second shift union position with a minimum of 40 hours per week in a 24/7 operation. You will inspect, diagnose, and repair complex systems, tune engines, and handle welding tasks as needed.

• Heavy machinery experience (A/E)
• FMCSA background check may be required
• CDL-X must be obtained within 89 days of hire

Responsibilities

• Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing hydraulic, air conditioning, hydraulic and pneumatic brake, carburetion, emission, automatic transmission, starting, charging, and electrical systems
• Tuning engines with analyzers
• Diagnosing and repairing front-end suspension systems
• Diagnosing and repairing cylinder heads
• Performing incidental welding, cutting, heating, and brazing
• May require overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays during storms or emergencies

LOCATION & HOURS

This position is onsite at the Hamilton Service Center located in Hamilton, MI.

This is a second (2nd) shift union position with the requirement to work a minimum of 40 hours per week in a 24/7 operation.

GENERAL SUMMARY & JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Automotive & Equipment (A/E) Mechanic assists Master Automotive & Equipment Mechanic and, under directive supervision, performs mechanical work on vehicles and equipment at the grade indicated by such duties as:

• Inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting and repairing such systems as hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic and pneumatic brake systems, carburetion and emission systems, automatic transmission system, starting systems, charging systems, and electrical systems
• Tuning engines which include use of all types of analyzers
• Diagnosing, adjusting and repairing front-end suspension systems
• Diagnosing and repairing cylinder heads
• Making minor repairs to booms, buckets, and vehicle and equipment bodies
• Performing routine inspections of man lift and material lift aerial devices
• Performing incidental acetylene welding, cutting, heating, and brazing
• May be required irregular work schedules which may include working overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays related to storms and other business-related emergencies
• Performing other similar or related work as necessary

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• The individual shall exemplify safe work practices and comply with all of the company's safety standards and procedures
• He/she must utilize effective oral and written communication skills to effectively log plant status and interact with coworkers
• Temperature conditions within the plant can fluctuate and can reach above 100 degrees; in addition, should they need to evaluate outdoor equipment, the individual will be exposed to outdoor temperatures that fluctuate with weather conditions

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
• The noise level varies from normal to loud depending on construction activity and plant mode of operation

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma/GED with two (2) or more years of experience as an A/E Mechanic or equivalent with hands on experience working with heavy machinery
• Individuals applying for this position must successfully pass a test for controlled substance and alcohol and may be subject to a background screen in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
• Candidate must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License with a Hazardous Endorsement (CDL-X) within 89 days of hire

PREFERRED SKILLS

• State of Michigan, Secretary of State | SOS - Mechanic Certification
• National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification
• Automotive Degree from Accredited School
• Hands-on experience with Air Brakes and hydraulics
