Job summary

Boone County Schools in West Virginia is seeking a Cook to join our school food service program. The Cook will assist with food preparation, serving, sanitation, and other duties to ensure nutritious meals for students and staff while maintaining a safe, sanitary, and efficient operation.

  • Wash dishes, trays, utensils, pots, pans, and food-service equipment.
  • Assist with proper disposal of trash and food waste.
  • Follow all sanitation, food safety, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Follow procedures relating to allergens and special dietary needs.

Job description

EMPLOYMENT TERM

Employment term established by the Boone County Board of Education in accordance with the approved school calendar and applicable West Virginia law.

REPORTS TO

Principal and/or Cafeteria Manager, Food Services Supervisor, and Superintendent or designee.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Cook performs food preparation, serving, cleaning, sanitation, and other duties necessary for the efficient operation of the school food service program. The employee shall assist in providing nutritious meals to students and staff while maintaining a safe, sanitary, efficient, and professional food service environment.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED, if required by applicable West Virginia law or Boone County Schools policy.
  • Meet all requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education, Boone County Schools, and applicable state law for employment as school service personnel.
  • Possess or obtain required food-handler and food-safety training or certification.
  • Successfully complete any required competency testing or training for the position.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements associated with school food service work.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, employees, administrators, and the public.
  • Must meet all criminal background check and employment requirements established by law and Board policy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The employee shall:

  • Assist with the preparation, cooking, portioning, and serving of breakfast, lunch, and other food items as assigned.
  • Prepare food according to approved menus, recipes, portion sizes, and nutritional requirements.
  • Assist with serving meals to students and staff in an efficient and courteous manner.
  • Operate kitchen equipment and appliances safely and properly.
  • Assist with receiving, storing, rotating, and maintaining food and supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate temperatures for food preparation, storage, serving, and holding in accordance with food-safety requirements.
  • Clean and sanitize food preparation areas, serving areas, equipment, utensils, dishes, tables, storage areas, and other assigned areas.
  • Wash dishes, trays, utensils, pots, pans, and food-service equipment.
  • Assist with proper disposal of trash and food waste.
  • Follow all federal, state, local, and school system requirements regarding sanitation, food safety, student nutrition, and workplace safety.
  • Follow established procedures relating to allergens, special dietary requirements, and prevention of cross-contamination.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate food and supply inventories.
  • Assist with recordkeeping, reports, meal counts, production records, inventories, or other documentation as assigned.
  • Assist with unloading and storing food, supplies, and equipment when necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe kitchen and cafeteria environment.
  • Follow the direction of the Cafeteria Manager, Principal, Food Services Supervisor, Superintendent, or designee.
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning students, employees, and school matters.
  • Demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain professional conduct and appropriate relationships with students and staff.
  • Perform other duties reasonably related to the operation of the school food service program as assigned by the supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Bending, reaching, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
  • Repetitive use of hands and arms.
  • Lifting and moving food, supplies, equipment, trays, containers, and other materials associated with food service operations.
  • Working around hot surfaces, ovens, steam, refrigeration equipment, cleaning products, and wet or slippery surfaces.
  • Working in environments where temperatures may vary.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Performance shall be evaluated based upon:

  • Quality and efficiency of assigned work.
  • Compliance with sanitation and food-safety requirements.
  • Proper preparation and serving of meals.
  • Care and proper use of equipment.
  • Cooperation with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Dependability and attendance.
  • Professional conduct.
  • Compliance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.
CLASSIFICATION

The employee shall be classified and compensated according to the applicable West Virginia service personnel classification and pay grade.

Depending upon the duties assigned and the employee's qualifications and experience, the position may fall within the applicable Cook I, Cook II, or Cook III classification established by West Virginia law.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be established according to the Boone County Board of Education salary schedule, applicable West Virginia law, and the employee's classification, experience, and employment status.
