SUMMARY:

The Food Service Staff/Cook assists in the proper preparation of food, preparing salad bar setup and maintenance during service, service line set up, and serving of meals. The staff/cook assists in kitchen cleaning as part of maintaining a safe food production and service environment. Staff/cooks are also responsible, as assigned, for recordkeeping of temperatures and production, inventory counting and cashiering duties including recording meal sales, record keeping, money collection and all other functions included in processing advanced payments.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Food Service experience preferred but not required.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Understand and communicate the customer service approach of the Food Services Program.
  2. Participate in the proper preparation and/or reheating of main course items, side dishes and salad bar preparation and serving of meals according to the Food Service Department Standards.
  3. Participate in the proper receiving, storage and inventorying of all foods, paper, chemicals and dry stores according to the Food Service Department Standards.
  4. Ensure the freshness of all prepared items by implementing proper rotation of food items prepared, properly wrapping and labeling prepared food items, and preparing only the amounts of food items as assigned.
  5. Participate and maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of all kitchen, cafeteria and storage areas including, but not limited to, walk-ins, refrigeration, freezers, dry storage and Food Service site office areas.
  6. Participate in the meal service preparation as assigned dependent on the school site's needs. Follow menu instructions, portion sizes; utilize proper equipment, etc.
  7. Maintain a smooth flow of service and works closely with co-workers to assure that the students, staff and faculty have a pleasurable dining experience.
  8. Assist in accurate inputting of all production and meal count data required for compliance with the National School Lunch Program.
  9. If serving as a cashier, accurately reports all sales transactions, account balances, collection of funds, processing of advanced payments and preparation of daily deposit slips.
  10. Foster district commitment to excellence and equity by ensuring that employees and students are valued, respected and provided a positive work/learning environment.
  11. Establish positive relations with internal and external customers, including students, staff, and school administration, parents, and community members.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical activities and demands are as follows: stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, hear, taste, smell. Weight and force demands up to 50 pounds frequently, up to 100 pounds occasionally. Mental functions include compare, analyze, communicate, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, negotiate.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Wet or humid conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, work with explosives, risk of radiation, vibration. Vision demands: no special vision requirements, close vision, color vision. Noise level: moderate to loud.
