Job summary

United Alloy in Janesville, WI, is seeking an experienced CNC laser cutting operator to set up, calibrate, and maintain laser cutting cells. You will perform inspections, collaborate with maintenance, and optimize workflows to meet production goals. The role requires blueprints reading and CNC process knowledge, with hands-on use of cranes and measuring tools.

Qualifications

  • Two years’ experience operating CO2 or Fiber CNC laser-cutting machines.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Solid understanding of CNC processes.
  • Capable of operating overhead cranes and precision measurement tools.
  • Experience with metal fabrication concepts and safety practices.
  • Ability to lift up to 25–100 pounds with assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, and optimize laser cutting cells and automation equipment.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and cut-quality verification to ensure standards.
  • Maintain documentation for inspections, audits, and production processes.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance for repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Monitor schedules and adjust priorities to meet customer requirements.
  • Assist nesting team and modify programs to maximize material utilization.
  • Participate in CI, Lean, and Kaizen initiatives to improve safety and productivity.
  • Train operators on machine operation, quality requirements and standard work.

Hours: Sunday - Thursday 10:00pm - 6:00pm (OT as required)

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, and optimize laser cutting cells and automation equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation.
  • Perform routine process audits, including first-piece inspections, cut-quality verification, preventive maintenance checks, and other operational assessments to ensure compliance with quality and production standards.
  • Complete, maintain, and submit all required documentation related to inspections, audits, maintenance activities, and production processes.
  • Partner with Maintenance personnel to diagnose equipment issues, coordinate repairs, and minimize production downtime.
  • Monitor production schedules and adjust machine priorities, cell assignments, and support workflow as necessary to meet customer and operational requirements.
  • Manage the movement of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods into and out of laser cells while maintaining effective communication across shifts and departments.
  • Collaborate with nesting team and create and modify nesting programs when needed to maximize material utilization, throughput, and production efficiency.
  • Collaborate with team leads, supervisors, engineering, and management to identify opportunities for workflow improvements, productivity gains, and cost reduction.
  • Monitor inventory levels of raw materials, consumables, tooling, and operational supplies; communicate replenishment needs to management in a timely manner.
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement (CI), Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, and cross-functional teams focused on enhancing safety, quality, delivery, and productivity performance.
  • Work closely with downstream departments, including Manufacturing Engineering, Forming, Welding, and other internal customers, to resolve issues and improve process flow.
  • Maintain ownership of 6S workplace organization standards, including housekeeping, tool accountability, visual controls, and area cleanliness.
  • Train and assist operators on proper machine operation, quality requirements, troubleshooting techniques, and standard work practices as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, quality standards, and operating procedures.
  • Support production objectives through effective communication, problem-solving, and proactive identification of opportunities to improve equipment performance and process efficiency.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Over two years’ experience operating CO2 or Fiber CNC laser-cutting machines. Cincinnati or Mitsubishi, preferred.
  • Understanding of flat print drawing
  • Thorough understanding of CNC processes.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • The individual must have exposure to metal fabrication concepts and processes.
  • Must possess the ability to operate overhead cranes, tape measure, caliper, basic hand tools and air tools.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds with an assist.
