Job summary

Hastings Public Schools is seeking a Food Service Cook Assistant for a 3-hour shift in our cafeteria. The position is non-exempt and compensated at $19.59 per hour, with benefits and salary information per the district's Food Service Master Contract 2024-2026 on the district website.

Responsibilities include assisting with food preparation, portioning, serving, monitoring temperatures, and HACCP compliance.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and communicate in English.
• Accurately count, weigh, and measure ingredients.
• Adapt to sudden and unpredictable changes in daily tasks or workflow.
• Follow instructions and take initiative in performance of assigned tasks.
• Physical ability to walk, stand, and lift.
• Lifting up to 40 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently.

Responsibilities

• Interact with staff, students, faculty, visitors, and co-workers in a pleasant and professional manner.
• Assist with food preparation using recipe techniques (chopping, dicing, mixing, slicing).
• Portion foods into appropriate quantities per recipe or instructions.
• Place menu and a la carte items on serving line and assemble serving utensils.
• Serve food according to recipe portions or as instructed.
• Monitor and record temperatures of food and beverages, report unsafe temperatures, and act accordingly.
• Operate POS system and handle changes; apply Offer vs. Serve principles.
• Wash trays, pans, and other items using dish machine or three-compartment sink.
• Disassemble serving line and clean serving area.
• Discard or store leftovers properly.
• Perform cleaning tasks and HACCP compliance.

• Physical ability to walk, stoop, stand, twist, reach, and squat on a constant basis
• Physical ability to use hands and fingers dexterously
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently

Environmental Requirements

• Must work in a hot, humid environment
• Must work in a cold or below zero environment for short period
• Must work in a noisy environment

Essential Job Functions

• Interact with staff, students, faculty, visitors, and co-workers in a pleasant and professional manner
• Use techniques outlined in recipe or as instructed (chopping, dicing, mixing, slicing, etc.) to assist with food preparation
• Portion foods into appropriate quantities per recipe or as instructed
• Place menu and a la carte foods on serving line and assemble the appropriate serving utensils
• Serve food according to recipe portion or as instructed
• Monitor and record temperatures of food and beverages, report unsafe temperatures to in-charge individual, and take appropriate corrective actions
• Operate point of sale system including making change if necessary and utilize Offer vs. Serve principles
• Wash trays, pans, and other items using dish machine or three (3) compartment sink
• Disassemble serving line and clean serving area
• Discard or properly store leftover foods
• Perform cleaning tasks as assigned
• Perform all tasks in accordance with HACCP guidelines

Other Job Functions

• Report to work at scheduled time with proper uniform and appropriately groomed
• Adhere to all school district, building, and department rules and regulations
• Assist in unpacking boxes, stocking storeroom or coolers, pulling food items from storeroom and other inventory management duties as assigned
• Utilize proper hand washing techniques
• Participate in meetings, training sessions, and seminars as scheduled
• Complete other tasks as assigned
