Job summary

General Dynamics NASSCO in Norfolk, VA is seeking 5 Outside Machinists (J1–J4) for the 2nd shift (3pm–11pm). This role requires ability to obtain DBIDS and NAVSEA badges and work in a shipyard environment.

Positions are based in Norfolk, Virginia, with responsibilities spanning mechanical overhaul, reading blueprints, and operating a variety of shop tools. Candidates should have 2–5 years’ direct shipyard experience and a strong safety record.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
• Must be able to read and use tech manuals and blueprints and specification items.
• Experience operating a variety of shop tools and equipment.
• Proficient in measurement and alignment with precision tools.
• Ability to follow safety rules and shipyard procedures.

Responsibilities

• A. Overhaul, install and test machinery including winches, air compressors, pumps and gear systems.
• B. Propulsion experience with shafting repairs, propeller and rudder work.
• C. Use grinders, drill presses & hydraulics; maintain tools.
• D. Ensure safe, quality work with proper staging and PPE.
• E. Complete repairs with minimal supervision and proper documentation.
• F. Follow WAF tickets and safety standards at the job site.
• G. Maintain clean, organized workspace and communicate progress to foreman.
