Job summary

Osseo Area School District ISD 279 is seeking a dedicated Custodian to perform building and grounds maintenance, operate and monitor building automation controls, and support facility users in a safe, clean environment.

You will handle routine repairs, housekeeping, snow removal, and security procedures, with a focus on reliability, communication, and excellent customer service. The role runs Mon-Fri evenings, with year-round hours and Class 1 or Class 2 pay based on MN boiler license status.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must obtain MN Specialist boiler license to be eligible for Class 2 pay and shift differential.
  • Knowledge of building systems and safety procedures required.

Responsibilities

  • Assume daily responsibility for the position.
  • Direct and relay work orders to custodial staff and coordinating stakeholders.
  • Perform cleaning duties including dust mopping, waxing floors, cleaning restrooms, and window washing.
  • Carry out minor carpentry, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing repairs as needed.
  • Support kitchen staff by cleaning floors and stocking storerooms.
  • Monitor and adjust building automation controls.
  • Secure facilities and operate security system.
  • Report vandalism or security issues promptly.
  • Maintain building grounds: mowing, trimming, weeding, and debris removal.
  • Perform snow removal and keep sidewalks clear.
  • Maintain and file reports and logs in a timely manner.
  • Paint district facilities as required.
  • Operate and maintain boiler systems for safe operation.
  • Set up and take down equipment for events.
  • Provide excellent customer service to facility users.

Job description

Job summary:

To inspire and prepare each and every scholar with the confidence, courage and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning by performing tasks and duties associated with the maintenance and care of district facilities, equipment, and grounds.

Responsibilities and tasks include:
  • Assuming full responsibility daily of the position being subbed for.
  • Communicating work allocation directives issued by the Coordinator and/or Assistant Coordinator, Facilities Operations and building principal to the building custodial personnel.
  • Performing general housekeeping tasks to include, but not limited to, dust mopping and wet mopping classrooms, restrooms and hallway floors, cleaning restrooms, stripping and sealing resilient and hard surface floors, washing windows, walls, lockers; vacuum all carpeted areas of the building; housekeeping tasks to be performed according to established district systems and cleaning standards;
  • Performing minor carpentry, electrical, mechanical and non-potable water system plumbing repairs to include but not limited to cleaning equipment, ceilings and floor tile and carpet;
  • Providing support to kitchen staff by mopping floors and unloading groceries and stacks in storeroom, and stock supplies in storeroom;
  • Monitoring and adjusting building automation controls;
  • Securing the facility; arming and disarming the security system; and
  • Reporting vandalism or unauthorized individuals in buildings.
  • Maintaining building grounds including, but not limited to, watering, mowing, trimming, pruning shrubs, trees, weeding, removing paper and debris from school yard and along fence lines.
  • Performing snow removal and keeping sidewalks free of ice
  • Taking charge of all aspects of the physical operation of the building for which they are responsible.
  • Reporting to the Assistant Coordinator, Maintenance Services (or their designee) any breakdown of equipment that is not functioning as designed.
  • Maintaining and submitting all appropriate reports and logs in a timely manner.
  • Painting district facilities to include but not limited to walls, doors, frames, etc.
  • Maintaining building equipment per department guidelines.
  • Operating and maintaining boiler: Checking boiler to ensure appropriate operation.
  • Setting up and taking down equipment including but not limited to tables, chairs, band shell, etc.; and
  • Responding to questions and providing excellent customer service to facility users.
  • Performing other comparable duties of a like or similar nature as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include:
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Must obtain MN Specialist boiler license to get Class 2 pay plus the Shift Differential
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
  • Computer skills, including proper use of email communication
  • Knowledge of proper operation of building automation systems
  • Knowledge of hand, power, diagnostic tools, and equipment required in the performance of the job.
  • Knowledge of all safety precautions applicable to trade.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals and procedures of HVAC operation, repair, and proactive/reactive maintenance.
  • General knowledge in the principles of general repair and maintenance in such areas as mechanical, electrical, steam, air system, carpentry, and masonry or plumbing.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques and materials.
  • Caring for and repairing facilities and equipment.
  • Working with the principal and building staff on correcting issues as they arise.
  • Responding effectively to student, staff and community needs.
  • Providing excellent customer service.
  • Using problem solving techniques.
  • Demonstrating effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Maintaining accurate/current records
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Helping, taking instructions, and exchanging information.
Preferred qualifications include:
  • MN Special boiler license preferred.
  • Training or experience cleaning and maintaining a commercial facility desired.
