Job summary

Labcorp is seeking a Cytogenetics Technologist II to join our Torrance, CA team. The role focuses on FISH testing and analysis for heme and FFPE specimens, with duties in wet lab procedures and result interpretation.

Schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm, with flexibility based on business needs. The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science, at least three years of clinical lab experience, and one year of FISH wet lab experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Biological science or related field.
  • Three years or more of clinical laboratory testing experience.
  • One year of FISH wet lab and FISH analysis experience.
  • California Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist License.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tissue culture, harvesting, slide making, and banding.
  • Conduct automated karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing.
  • Interpret test results and ensure accuracy for patient care.
  • Monitor instrumentation and troubleshoot to maintain functionality.
  • Document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies when needed.
  • Assist with specimen processing and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Communicate results clearly and adhere to SOPs.

Job description

Labcorp is seeking a Cytogenetics Technologist II to join our team at in Torrance, CA.

Work Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday 2pm-10:30pm (Flexible)

This position is primarily focused on Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) testing and analysis, including both wet laboratory procedures and interpretation of results for hematologic (heme) and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform routine procedures including tissue culture, harvesting, slide making and banding, automated karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing, probing, and scoping.
  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
  • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • Three years or more of clinical laboratory testing experience
  • One year of experience performing FISH wet lab and FISH analysis.
  • California Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of experience performing FISH wet laboratory testing and FISH analysis.
  • Three years performing and interpreting FISH assays on both hematologic (heme) and FFPE specimens.
  • Scientist in Cytogenetics - CG(ASCP)
Additional Job Standards
  • In lieu of education requirements listed above, non-traditional degrees with applicable science credits that meet CLIA standards may meet education requirements
  • Understanding of laboratory operations as well as policies and procedures
  • Experience working in a high volume laboratory environment
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position
  • Able to pass a standardized color blindness test
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot assays, resolve technical issues, and maintain high-quality laboratory performance.

Pay Range: $25-$50

All job offers will be based on a candidate’s skills and prior relevant experience, applicable degrees/certifications, as well as internal equity and market data.
