The Role

The Team

As a designer within GM’s Human Interface Design organization, you will craft intuitive, human-centered experiences across vehicles, digital platforms, and design systems. You will work independently on complex design challenges, collaborating across disciplines to deliver solutions that align with GM’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.

We are hiring interns across three focus areas for Summer 2027:

  • Vehicle Experiences – Designs the future of in-vehicle digital ecosystems, from operating systems and cabin interfaces to connected customer experiences across digital touchpoints. This team partners closely with engineering and product to deliver intuitive, accessible, and delightful experiences that enhance driving and connect millions of users worldwide. Sitting at the intersection of industrial and digital design, these designers work on forward-looking strategies that shape how users interact with evolving systems.
  • Advanced UX – Explores next-generation vehicle experiences through conceptual visualization and rapid prototyping. This team pushes boundaries with bold ideation and human-centered design to shape seamless interactions across hardware and software. Designers here blend creativity and technical know-how to envision future mobility experiences that are intuitive, inclusive, and aesthetically refined.
  • Services & Web Platform – Shapes the future of web and app experiences across GM and its marquee brands. This team ensures GM’s digital ecosystem feels effortless, engaging, and safe, connecting drivers and passengers to their vehicles and services through thoughtful, human-centered design.
What You’ll Do
  • Collaborate closely with team members and cross-functional teams to craft a premier user experience across products and platforms.
  • Balance user needs, technical constraints, and business objectives to solve problems effectively.
  • Develop production interaction designs following design guidelines.
  • Create design deliverables to communicate your work, including sketches, drawings, mockups, animations, and prototypes.
  • Release production specifications and assets to software engineering teams.
  • Present work to peers and leadership.
  • Work with product teams and engineers to execute user interface designs as a seamless part of the overall user experience, advocating aesthetics and visual design principles.
  • Participate in design critiques to guide design decisions.

Required Qualifications
  • Pursuit of a bachelor's degree or advanced degree in User Experience Design, Human Computer Interaction, Integrated Design, Design Science, Product Design, Fine Arts - Interaction/Interactive Design, Digital Media/Media Arts, Design & Technology, or a similar field.
  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and May 2029.
  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in common design tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping software.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship-management skills to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization as needed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience.
  • Emerging partnership and collaboration skills and the ability to learn from and share knowledge with coworkers in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, and initiative/self-direction.
  • Evidence of strong character with honesty, accountability, and trust.
  • Consistently demonstrates innovative, customer-centric thinking.

Work Arrangement

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This position does not require an employee to be onsite full-time, but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite an average of three (3) days each week if located within 50 miles of a Global Technical Center in Warren, MI. GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program. To help facilitate administration of relocation benefits if you are selected, please apply using the permanent address you would move from.
