Job summary

General Motors is seeking a creative design intern to help launch bold design initiatives for interiors and exteriors. You will generate new concepts, produce perspective sketches and renderings, and develop 2D and 3D mock-ups while collaborating with engineers, modelers, and fabrication teams.

Applicants must be enrolled in Industrial Design or related fields and graduate between 2027 and 2029, available to work full-time over the summer, and submit a portfolio for consideration.

The Role

At General Motors, we pride ourselves on designing, building, and selling the world's best vehicles and transportation solutions. We are seeking a new generation of visionaries to help launch bold Design initiatives and shape new directions for General Motors. Through our Intern Program, you will gain hands‑on, career‑specific experience while learning from industry leaders and experts in Creative Design. GM Design's 2027 internship opportunities include Creative Design Interiors and Creative Design Exteriors. We are looking for enthusiastic creative students who are willing to learn, enhance their skills, work as a team, and communicate what they are working on.

The Team

The Creative Design team works with studio engineers, modelers, designers, and fabrication personnel to develop design solutions and scale models for future vehicles.

What You’ll Do
  • Create new and unique design concepts.
  • Make perspective sketches and renderings sufficient to communicate innovative design ideas.
  • Develop two- and three‑dimensional mock‑ups of proposed design solutions.
  • Work with studio engineers, modelers, other designers, and fabrication personnel in the development of a scale model.

Required Qualifications
  • Pursuit of a bachelor's degree or advanced degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Transportation Design, or Automotive Design.
  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and May 2029.
  • Able to work full‑time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with Photoshop or comparable digital sketch software.
  • Strong sketching skills, including perspective, shading, proportions, and line quality.
  • Strong visual communication skills demonstrating varied materials, finishes, and textures.
  • Experience with the fundamentals of 3D digital software such as Blender, Sub‑D, Alias, or comparable tools.
  • Ability to understand a brand and customer and propose designs that represent the brand's design language and identity.
  • Portfolio including automotive and/or industrial product design proposals; a minimum of three unique projects is recommended.
  • Portfolio examples showing development of a design concept from 2D to 3D.
  • Developmental sketches highlighting the thought process and selection leading to the final design.
Work Arrangement

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. The successful candidate is expected to report to Pasadena, CA, or Warren, MI, on a full‑time basis. Each successful candidate will be offered an onsite role at a specific location. Candidate location preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed. GM will provide a one‑time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program. Start dates for this internship role are May & June of 2027.

Compensation
  • The salary for this role is $6,100 monthly.
