Job summary

General Motors in Kansas City offers a hands‑on Tool and Die internship designed to mentor engineering students through the operation and maintenance of specialized tooling. You’ll learn root cause analysis, mechanical problem solving and leadership by supporting skilled trades and providing technical guidance on tooling projects in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Start dates are May 24th and June 14th, 2027, with a one-time lump-sum relocation stipend for eligible students.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Machine Technology, or related tool and die program.
• Graduating between August 2027 and June 2029.
• Able to work full-time (40 hours per week) and in a plant environment.

• Stays ahead of current product, procedure and technical developments and trends in areas of manufacturing expertise (Stamping).

• Assist in the design and building of tools and equipment or recommends improvements to existing processes.

Job description

What You’ll Do

Our plants are the groundwork for GM and a hotbed of innovation. Interns to do hands‑on work that could add directly to the bottom line of our culture and our company. We need Tool and Die interns to assist skilled trade personnel in the operation and maintenance of specialist equipment. These tasks would teach you root causing analysis and mechanical problem solving as well as leadership skills to provide technical support. This is a hands‑on position in which you may work with periodic repairs and to provide technical support and direction to support personnel/skilled trades.

Responsibilities

• Interact with a medium to large group of skilled trade employees

Required Qualifications

• Must be graduating between August 2027 and June 2029

• Must be willing to work in a plant environment

Specific physical requirements of the position include the ability to:

• Walk and stand for prolonged periods of time.


• Read standardized work instructions, operate machines and tools, and perform quality inspections.


• Promptly detect and respond to safety instructions, alarms, and signals.


• Wear personal protective equipment, for example: safety glasses, gloves, hats, ear plugs, and safety shoes.


• Work in a loud manufacturing environment that is not climate controlled (conditions can be hot or cold). Frequently and repetitively bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and reach to perform work.


• Lift or carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds and periodically carry or lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.


• Occasionally sit, climb (including ladders and lifts) and drive vehicles and equipment.

Work Arrangement

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their assigned facility on a full-time basis. Each successful candidate will be offered an onsite role at a specific location. Candidate location preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed.
