Job summary

Mattel is seeking a Safety & Regulatory Commercial Compliance Quality Engineer intern to join our Regulations and Compliance team in El Segundo. You will research international safety, regulatory and retailer requirements for children’s products and help apply them to internal procedures.

This paid internship offers the chance to work with legal, product development and QE teams, access training, maintain documentation, and contribute to a robust compliance program while you develop engineering

Qualifications

• Pursuing a BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Mechatronics) or related field.
• Interest in regulations and safety for consumer/children's products.
• Analytical and strategic thinker.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and product data.
• Excellent communication, verbal and written skills.

Responsibilities

• Research international safety, regulatory, and retailer requirements for children's products.
• Interpret retailer and licensor requirements to internal procedures for product development.
• Ensure requirements are timely, clear, and communicated to stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with domestic and international product safety laws.
• Provide guidance and training to internal labs, QE’s, and cross-functional teams on procedures and regulations.
• Maintain internal documentation, databases, and SharePoint content related to commercial compliance.
• Apply engineering knowledge to evaluate product design and samples for hazard analysis.
• Gather and organize information related to regulatory obligations (e.g., recalls) and prepare supporting documentation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance the compliance management framework.
• Engage with standard organizations (ASTM, ISO, Toy Association) to support regulatory development.

The Opportunity:

The Global Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance team is looking for a Safety & Regulatory Commercial Compliance Quality Engineer intern to join our Regulations and Compliance team based in our El Segundo office.

• Research international safety, regulatory, and retailer requirements applicable to children’s products.

• Interpret and apply retailer and licensor requirements to Mattel 's internal procedures to support product development.

• Ensure requirements are timely, clear, and effectively communicated to stakeholders.

• Ensure compliance with domestic and international product safety laws.

• Provide guidance and training to Mattel internal labs, QE’s, and cross functional teams on the standard procedures and regulations.

• Maintain internal documentation, databases, and SharePoint content related to commercial compliance

• Apply engineering knowledge to evaluate product design and physical product samples (hazard analysis) to identify potential safety concerns.

• Gather and organize information related to regulatory obligations (e.g, product recalls) and prepare supporting documentation and communications

• Collaborate with cross-function team (legal, product development, QE) to advance the compliance management framework to improve structure and consistency in our approach to compliance issues.

• Engage with trade and standard organizations (ASTM, ISO, Toy Association) to support development and alignment of regulatory requirements for children’s products.

What We’re Looking For:

• Working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Mechatronics), or related discipline.
