Mercury Systems in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a motivated Manufacturing Engineering Intern to learn hands-on in our SMT factory. In this role you will support improving efficiency across SMT workstreams and contribute fresh ideas to manufacturing processes.

You will perform pick-and-place, assist with reflow and wave soldering, contribute to conformal coating, and help design station layouts while applying Lean/Six Sigma concepts.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s in industrial/manufacturing engineering.
  • Minimum GPA 3.1; transcripts may be requested.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Minitab, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or simulation tools.
  • Understanding Lean/Six Sigma principles; data-driven problem solving.
  • Strong quantitative skills; able to work with data and models.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Support SMT operations with pick-and-place, chip and wire activities.
  • Assist with reflow to ensure proper soldering and quality.
  • Support wave soldering to maintain production standards.
  • Contribute to conformal coating processes for component protection.
  • Help design and optimize station layouts to improve flow and efficiency.

Onsite: Phoenix, AZ

Internship from May/June - August/September 2027

No relocation assistance or housing provided

Mercury Systems is seeking a motivated and innovative Manufacturing Engineering Intern eager to learn, contribute, and bring fresh ideas to our Surface Mount Technology factory in Phoenix, AZ. In this hands-on role, you'll support improving operational efficiencies across the different workstreams within our SMT processes.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Support manufacturing operations by performing pickandplace, chip and wire activities
  • Assist with reflow processes to ensure proper soldering and assembly quality
  • Support wave soldering operations to maintain consistent production standards
  • Contribute to conformal coating processes to protect electronic components
  • Help design and optimize station layouts to improve workflow and efficiency
  • Conduct capacity analysis to ensure production targets and resource planning are met
Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program inindustrial engineering manufacturing engineering, or a closely related field, with relevant coursework completed (e.g., operations research, statistics, systems design)
  • A minimum GPA of 3.1 is required. You will be asked to submit your transcripts during the review process
  • Familiarity with programs like Excel, Minitab, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or simulation tools (e.g., Arena, Simio) used for process analysis and optimization
  • Understanding of Lean/Six Sigma principles
  • Strong quantitative and statistical skills; Ability to work with data, perform statistical analysis, and apply mathematical models to solve efficiency and productivity problems
  • Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively
Preferred Qualifications:
  • CAD/Simulation Software Experience; AutoCAD, SolidWorks
  • ERP/MES Systems; SAP, Oracle, or other Manufacturing Execution Systems for production tracking and inventory management
  • Data Analytics & Visualization; Skills in Python, R, SQL, or Power BI/Tableau
